How to Use Google Adwords Planner

The Google keyword planner offers you two different options.

  • Discover New keywords
  • Get search volume and forecast.

Let us begin exploring the first option.

  1. “Discover new Keywords” option

How to use a keyword planner

This option allows you to discover new keywords ideas relating to your business. The tool gives you a chance to enter your keyword that is related to your business and requests you to provide your business domain.

The “Discover new Keywords” option further comes with two different options. It gives you an option to either “start with keywords” or ” Start with a website.” selecting either will give you almost similar results.

If you don’t have specific keywords in mind or you want Google to just suggest it for you, you can select the option “Start with a website.” This option lets the keywords planner browse through your website and suggest relevant and unique keywords that you can use in your ad.

Let’s take a practical example and see what the results are. Assuming you are selling men leather shoes in California USA, some of your keywords would be:

men shoes, Leather shoes, California men shoes, leather sneakers, and boots.

Inputting this on the first option of keywords, we click submit, we can see several details. The keyword planner shows tabular results that you can easily interpret.

The first column is the “Keyword (by relevance)” this column displays the keywords that you have in mind and adds other keywords ideas related to your suggested keywords.

The second column shows “Avg. Monthly searches” of every keyword. This is crucial in determining the keywords to select for your ad. It is preferred you select relevant keywords words that have a high monthly search. Some keywords have a shallow monthly search and therefore are not appropriate for your business ads.

However, you cannot use this column only when selecting your keywords. You ought to look at all the other columns for you to come up with the best keywords option.

The third column displays the level of competition on the specific keywords. This is also important to look at before deciding on what keywords to select. I would recommend you select keywords with a lower competition if you are new to google ads.

The fourth column is the “Ad impression” column. This column is used to compare how the keywords that you have already used in a google ad suits your business. It shows how the keywords matched users’ search after placing a google advertisement.

The fifth and the sixth columns show the amount to bid for your keywords to appear on the top page. It shows both the low range and the high range. The google keyword planner further shows how you can broaden your search and gives you the most relevant keywords for your business.

In our example, google suggested that we should broaden our search and include keywords like shoes, design shoes, footwear, authentic shoe, leather footwear, sneakers. From here, we can be able to select the most appropriate keywords based on all the tabular results presented.

  1. “Get search volume and forecast” Option

This option helps you in viewing the search volume of your keywords and forecasting how these keywords will perform in the future. It helps you know if you have selected the right keywords for your business. Moreover, you can use this option to evade high competition and select words that have a promising future with low competition.

Using the same example. Assuming that you are selling men leather shoes in California USA, some of your keywords would be: men shoes, Leather shoes, California men shoes, leather sneakers, boots

Inputting this on the second option, we can see several details

The results display two tables. The first table is usually a summary of your plan and cost. The table shows you your keywords plan, clicks that you are likely to get every month and how much you will pay for the ad on a monthly or daily basis.

CPC on the table simply implies the cost per click that you will pay if a user clicks on your Google ad. CTR on this table stands for Click Through Rate and is usually given as a percentage.

The second table the outlays finer details of the keywords that you entered. The table shows the individual results of each keyword that you proposed. From here, you can be able to see which keywords will likely bring traffic to your business.

In our example, the most effective keywords likely to get us good clicks may include Boots, Leather Shoes, and men’s shoes. The other keywords, such as California men shoes and Leather sneakers, are not worth using in our advertisement.

Basic Filtering for Budget and Audience

After assessing the search volume and the forecast of your keywords, you should consider filtering them to suit your budget and audience. Sometimes a keyword might have a very good search volume and a great forecast, but it might not be ideal for your audience.

Even if you use this to create an ad, you will not be getting any value since users will not find what they were looking for. You will end up paying for a click that is not boosting your business in any way. You should ensure you filter out keywords to suit your budget and suit your target audience.

Choose Quality Keywords Over Quantity

In our above example, we have seen that the keywords that have enough potential to boost our ad are the only three. The others have a negligible effect on our business.

You should, therefore, only select a few quality keywords that have a significant potential rather than using many keywords that do not have any significant effect on the business. The only choice keyword that adds quality to your ad and avoids combining many words.

Analyze your plan to optimize your budget

Before you decide on which keywords plan to use for your Google advert, you should analyze it and optimize it to fit your budget. One way of optimizing your plan is by removing keywords that are closely related.

For instance, if you have several keywords and two of them are ‘boots’ and ‘leather boots,’ you can decide to do away with ‘boots’ and minimize the cost of your ad. Conduct an analysis that you feel is right for your business. However, be careful not to focus so much on optimizing your budget and end up spoiling your plan.

Show Ads to Your Geographic Area Audience

Google allows its users to create Google Ads targeting a specific geographical location. This ensures that those who click your ad can easily access your business location.

It does not add value to your business if a user from another country clicks your ad and cannot get the services or products that you are offering. You should target your ads to your geographical location to maximize on acquiring potential clients.

Prepare for What Your Competition Is Paying

After placing a Google ad, you have no control over your competitors. The CPC bid determines which ad appears at the top. If your competitors increase their CPC bid, you should be ready also to increase your bid.

You should not fear competition since competition shows that there are potential clients visiting sites using specific keywords. Try your best to always be ready to pay what your competitors are paying or more.

Other Types of Keywords Planner

There are numerous types of keyword planners in the market, which you have to pay to use them. Luckily, Google offers you a free keyword planner when you advertise on it. However, you can also get other free keyword planners that work just the same as google keyword planner.

FAQ’s

Export the keywords you find in your Keyword Planner by clicking “download keyword ideas”. You will then want to cross-reference this list with other keyword research to formulate the ideal strategy. You can export the entire list or just a few words.

This number can vary greatly depending on budget and how quickly you want to see results. That being said, targeting around 5-6 keywords in the beginning is recommended for most small businesses.

Keywords are the topics and ideas that define what your content or company are all about. In SEO, these are the words that people who are searching type into a search engine.

Most SEO experts will agree that an ideal keyword density is around 1-2%. This means that your target keyword appears about one to two times per 100 words. At this rate, the keyword appears enough times to show search engines what the page is about without being seen as keyword stuffing.

Keyword stuffing is largely condemned by search engines, and could result in a penalty. In other words, if you fill your page with needless keywords, it won’t improve your chances of ranking higher; it will actually do the opposite.
