The Highland Fly

Tasmania has a wonderful wild brown trout fishery and I specialise in taking people fly fishing on the Central Highland Lakes, either fishing from my boat or wading. I welcome clients of all levels of fly fishing experience, and in particular spend a lot of time helping people take their first steps on their fly fishing journey. Learning to fly fish is a great challenge to take on at any stage of life – you never stop learning.

My own fishing journey started around 50 years ago and in recent years I have taken the experience I built up in 20 years of recreational fly fishing to establish my own small business.

I work with very small groups – ideally one or two people – so that their experience can be optimised. I like to learn about my guests and tailor my input to their particular needs. A day with me if fully inclusive – all gear can be supplied and the day is catered. I’m an accredited tour operator, have appropriate insurances, first aid qualifications and am accredited to operate from my boat.

If clients are planning a larger group I am happy to put a package together in collaboration with other Tasmanian guides. I am a member of Trout Guides and Lodges Of Tasmania and would draw on the expertise of others in the Association.

I tie many of my own trout flies, building on the Tasmanian traditional trout flies, and over the course of a day we will experiment with many of them. Wet flies – streamers and fur flies early in the season. Dry flies – mayflies, emergers, spinners and beetles as the season warms up.

Fly fishing is a bucket list experience for many and I’m happy to help clients fulfil that bucket list. And Tasmania is a wonderful setting for your experience.
