After moving Queenstown late 2020 as I was captivated by the wild, rugged beauty of the area, the strange and occasionally sordid history and the immersive experience of being surrounded by so much nature.

Roaring Meg Studios

Roaring Meg Studios is the realisation of a lifelong dream to express myself through the creation of Artworks in various mediums, primarily wood and some sandstone sculptures.
Roaring Meg is also the name of the Creek that runs past my backyard and so naming was a no-brainer.

I began working with timber as a child in my father’s shed and despite following several alternate career paths, some 40-odd years later find myself back, immersed in sawdust and shavings again.
I am endlessly fascinated by the elegance and beauty of timber, it’s grain, colour, variation, hardness, suppleness and other properties and strive to highlight these unique traits in each piece I create.

I use recycled, reclaimed and/or endemic species of timbers wherever possible to minimise the environmental impacts of my work to promote sustainability and the circular nature of Timber’s lifecycle. It is also a source of inspiration as you can see the work and ministrations of previous craftsmen from generations ago still reflected in the finish I leave on my work.
Although most of my work is in wood, as a qualified Sailmaker, some of my creations are made using various fabrics and materials.
Inspiration is also taken from both my experience as Yachtsman, Sailmaker then Sailor in the Royal Australian Navy, as well as life itself, and as such often have a nautical theme. Having lived in all but two of the Countries’ states and territories, and having sailed the Australian coastline from Gladstone to Fremantle (much of it many times), I’ve observed and absorbed sights and sounds that few will ever have a chance to see.
