Search Brings Dental Practices a Bigger Share of Website Visits Than Most Industries

For the typical dental practice in Diib's data, 35% of website visits came from unpaid search results, compared with 22% for websites in other industries.

WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOUR BUSINESS

Dental practices depend on unpaid search results more than most small businesses do. That makes search rankings closer to a core business metric than a marketing nice-to-have, and a drop in rankings can mean fewer new-patient visits.

People don’t browse for a dentist. They search for one, usually with a need and a location attached, such as “emergency dentist near me” or “teeth whitening in [city].” Diib’s data shows how much that matters.

Organic search traffic is the visitors who reach your website by clicking an unpaid result on Google or another search engine, not an ad.

What the data shows

Diib compared organic search visits with total website visits from June 30 to September 27, 2026. It included websites with at least 300 visits in that period and connected Google Analytics.

  • For the median dental practice (465 websites), organic search made up 35% of visits. The median across about 73,000 websites in other industries was 22%.
  • 28% of dental practices got at least half of all their visits from organic search, versus 17% elsewhere.

What this does and doesn’t tell you

This is aggregated Diib data from websites with connected analytics, so it leans toward businesses that actively track their marketing. A higher search share could mean dental websites rank well. It could also mean they get less traffic from other channels, such as social media or email, so search makes up a bigger slice. This data can’t separate the two.

Either way, for a typical practice, search is one of the most important ways new patients find the website. When rankings slip, the effect on new-patient visits is likely to show up faster than it would in an industry that leans on other channels.

One action worth taking

Make sure each main service you offer, such as cleanings, implants, whitening and emergency care, has its own page that names your city, then check monthly which of those pages bring in search visits.
