A ChatGPT Tracking Glitch Shifted AI Visits Into ‘Direct’ Traffic From Oct. 8 to 15
If your ChatGPT traffic seemed to fall in mid-October while Direct traffic rose, a tracking bug that came with GPT-6 is the likely cause. Those visitors probably still came. They just lost their label.
A drop in ChatGPT traffic between October 8 and 15, 2026, paired with a rise in Direct traffic, most likely reflects a labeling bug, not lost AI visibility. Expect that week to stay distorted in your reports, because the fix doesn't correct past data.
Google Analytics 4 (GA4) knows a visit came from ChatGPT in one of two ways: the link carries a tag (utm_source=chatgpt.com), or the browser passes along where the visitor came from, called the referrer. With neither, GA4 files the visit as Direct, the same bucket as someone typing your address.
What changed
OpenAI rolled out GPT-6 to paid ChatGPT plans on October 7 and to the Free and Go plans on October 8. Afterward, links inside ChatGPT’s answer text stopped carrying the tag and opened without a referrer. Links in the Sources panel and shopping links kept their tags.
As reported by Search Engine Journal and Search Engine Roundtable:
- SEO firm Graphite saw ChatGPT sessions in GA4 fall 22% to 57% starting October 9, across tracked sites that get meaningful AI traffic.
- In an early, sampled look, Adobe’s Cedric Huesler studied about 500 pages where ChatGPT drove at least 5% of visits. Comparing October 9-13 with the week before, ChatGPT visits fell by about 31,000 a day while Direct visits to the same pages rose by about 26,000 a day.
Confirmed vs. unconfirmed
Huesler says OpenAI told him on October 14 that it was a bug, and that a fix began rolling out early October 15. That is secondhand. OpenAI hasn’t commented publicly, and its release notes don’t mention it. SEO consultant Glenn Gabe said he wasn’t seeing the fix yet when the news broke. One monitoring firm, LLM Pulse, saw ChatGPT sessions drop without a matching rise in Direct, so not every lost visit is proven to have moved. Even with tags back, GA4 won’t go back and relabel visits it already counted as Direct.
Why it matters for a small business
If you watch AI referrals in GA4 or in reports built on it, including Diib’s, October 8-15 may look like ChatGPT stopped sending you people. Most of the evidence points to the visitors arriving with no label rather than disappearing. A one-week dip caused by a tracking bug isn’t a reason to rewrite your content or chase a new AI strategy.
