While You’re In Town: Helping Visitors Discover, Helping Locals Thrive
The Traveler’s Dilemma
Every year, millions of people head to national and state parks ready for adventure. They’re excited—but once they arrive, a big question hits:
“What should we do while we’re here?”
Most turn to Google. But the results are often disappointing:
The “top” restaurants are crowded, overpriced, or just okay.
Some of the best trails or attractions don’t even show up.
Local gems get buried under chains and tourist traps.
Visitors feel frustrated. Local businesses miss out. Everyone loses.
That’s the problem While You’re In Town was built to solve.
Where the Idea Began
This started on an anniversary trip to Niagara Falls.
My wife and I had done hours of research, but still missed key experiences. Google’s “must-try” restaurant gave us food poisoning. The famous elevator to the bottom of the falls? We only found it because we saw strangers in ponchos and asked them.
Then we noticed something bigger:
Canada’s side of the falls looked like a mini Las Vegas—booming, thriving.
The U.S. side felt rundown, with businesses struggling.
It didn’t make sense. Millions of people were visiting every year, yet local businesses were failing. The problem wasn’t traffic—it was connection.
That’s when the idea clicked: put a simple QR code in every hotel and nightly rental. When guests scan it, they instantly see the best things to do while they’re in town.
Why Now?
This idea existed years ago, but QR codes weren’t mainstream. That changed during COVID. Now, everyone knows how to scan a QR code.
Pair that with:
Custom tech we built for distribution and content management
Professional video + advertising expertise
…and the timing was finally right.
The Scope of the Opportunity
Southern Utah is surrounded by world-class destinations:
20 minutes to Zion National Park
2 hours to Bryce Canyon
60 miles to the Grand Canyon
Dozens of state parks, lakes, and hidden gems
Millions of travelers pass through. Yet many businesses close their doors. Why?
Because being near a national park doesn’t guarantee customers. If visitors don’t know about you—or don’t know why you’re worth the stop—they’ll pass right by.
That’s the gap While You’re In Town bridges.
The Small Business Struggle
Most local businesses have three marketing choices:
Do nothing → Hope customers stumble across you.
Do it yourself → Hustle nonstop, post online, run your own ads (exhausting).
Hire an agency → Spend thousands per month (unrealistic for small towns).
Most end up doing a little of #2, then sliding into #1. The result? They’re invisible most of the time.
The heartbreaking part? These are good businesses—great food, amazing tours, unique shops. They just don’t have a reliable way to get noticed.
How While You’re In Town Works
We built a system that makes discovery simple for travelers and visibility consistent for businesses.
Business Listings
Every business can be listed on their city page—and nearby cities they serve.
Free listing: Bottom of the page
Premium listing: Higher placement, more visibility
Featured listing: Top spot, maximum traffic
QR Codes
Our QR codes are distributed where travelers are already looking:
Hotels, rentals, RV parks
Restaurants, menus, bathrooms, lobbies
Trailheads, billboards, event venues
Scan the code → see a curated local guide → discover businesses they’d never find otherwise.
Video Production
High-quality video sells, but most small businesses can’t afford it. We make it efficient and affordable so you look amazing without draining your budget.
Guaranteed Reach
Video only works if people see it. With our ad system, you pick how many people you want to reach each month. We make sure it happens—no guesswork.
Social Media Content
We repurpose unused video footage into a year’s worth of posts. Professional, consistent content at a fraction of the cost of agencies.
Sponsored Attractions
Businesses can sponsor popular attractions. Example: Edge of the World Brewery sponsored a mountain biking trail. Riders saw their name and came in for a beer afterward. It works naturally.
Welcome Package
Visitors who sign up get access to free gifts and discounts from local businesses.
Guests feel special
Businesses track results through coupon codes
We collect leads to bring visitors back in the future
Website Embeds
Tourism offices, chambers, and rentals can embed our guides on their websites—giving guests local recommendations without sending them elsewhere.
Proof It Works
Bee’s Marketplace grew year after year, eventually building a massive new store that became a local anchor.
Edge of the World Brewery consistently hears customers say, “We saw your video. We saw your name on the trail guide. We had to stop by.”
These are just two examples of what happens when visitors can actually connect with the businesses they came to town to find.
Why Collaboration Matters
This only works if the community works together.
Visitors don’t just want one activity or one restaurant. They want the big picture:
What to do
Where to eat
Where to stay
Where to shop
The more complete the guide, the better their experience. And the better their experience, the more likely they are to leave glowing reviews, tell their friends, and return again.
This isn’t about one business winning—it’s about lifting the entire destination.
The Bigger Vision
While You’re In Town is more than a marketing tool. It’s about strengthening local economies, empowering small businesses, and giving visitors better experiences.
We started in Southern Utah, but this model works anywhere:
Any town near a national or state park
Any destination with hidden gems waiting to be discovered
The future is simple:
Visitors discover amazing experiences effortlessly
Businesses thrive with consistent, affordable exposure
Communities grow stronger as tourism dollars stay local
The Invitation
Here’s what While You’re In Town offers:
A better trip for visitors
A reliable stream of customers for businesses
A stronger economy for communities
Small businesses shouldn’t have to gamble on whether customers will find them. They shouldn’t burn out trying to do it all.
They deserve a system that works—one that promotes them consistently, affordably, and effectively.
That’s exactly what we’ve built.
So the question is:
When people ask, “What should we do while we’re in town?” — will your business be part of the answer?
