Molly’s Gritty Mix is a purposeful blend of 1/3 organic, 2/3 mineral materials, including poultry grit, calcined clay, worm castings, coir fibre, limestone (calcitic and dolomitic), coarse perlite, Canadian sphagnum peat moss, Rhizophagus irregularis, Bacillus pumilus, and a wetting agent. Rhizophagus irregularis and Bacillus pumilis are beneficial fungi and bacteria. Rhizophagus irregularis is a mycorrhizal fungus in the soil acting as an extension of the plant’s root system and is more effective in nutrient and water absorption than the roots themselves and Bacillus pumilus is bacteria that colonizes plant roots, enhancing nutrient provision, control of disease-causing pathogens, and the promotion of pest-defense systems. The mix of these mineral and organic materials results in a well-draining substrate that is ideal for succulents, caudex plants and cacti.
