Summerbug Craft’s

Hi there! My name is Summer. I am 27 years old and live in the beautiful and happy city of Toronto with my husband, cat, and dog. I work full-time downtown and am working on completing an Administrative Assistant certificate at Seneca College. I like to browse the business and craft sections of bookstores and play PokemonGO on my nightly walks with my hubby.

Summerbug Craft’s was created by me to keep my mind and hands busy, and cope with my Bipolar diagnosis. It was created in August of 2015 and started out as a wide range of DIY crafts for sale. I started out with an Etsy shop, which expanded to both an Etsy and Ravelry shop once I discovered my passion for crochet. Once I became experienced enough with crochet, I began creating and selling my own patterns on these sites.

Before transitioning from Etsy to my own shop on Squarespace, I had a ranking of 4.5 out of 5 stars. I made the decision to transfer to Squarespace because the fees from Etsy and Ravelry were taking more of my profit than I was getting to keep. With a little help from my graphic designer best friend, summerbug.ca was created and I have been on Squarespace ever since. Now I’m slowly forming my own community focused on the Japanese crochet art of Amigurumi. Amigurumi is the art of crocheting tiny stuffed animals, although I generally make mine to be more medium sized. Amigurumi is where I excel, have passion, and found my niche. My bookcases are lined with amigurumi patterns books that I have collected over the years.

Not only am I the founder of Summerbug Craft’s, I am the designer of the crochet patterns for beginners that are offered on my site. I sell the crochet toys that I make, as well as write a blog on crochet tips and tricks. I take and edit my own photos and update my website on my own. All social media marketing is done by me. Summerbug Craft’s is a one-woman show.

My products mainly focus on pop-culture references, such a video game characters, cute monsters, adorable animals, and fruit. My short-term goal is to eventually get enough traffic for Google AdSense to take me on and bring in some extra revenue and increase my sales of my products. My long-term goal is to have a wide enough audience and authority in my field to be offered a yarn sponsorship by any of the big-name companies, such as Red Heart or Lion Brand Yarn.

I am constantly learning and improving my skills in crochet, photography and writing to have more of a voice in the crochet community. Dyeing and selling yarn is a skill I would like to add to my arsenal to eventually sell on my platform as well.

Summerbug Craft’s isn’t just a “hobby” or a “side hustle” for me. Summerbug Craft’s is my passion project and has kept me focused and grounded by giving me a purpose. I looked forward to its continuing growth and forward momentum.

Thank you,
Summer
