The Static Roots Festival is filling a niche in the German music scene since 2016. It is the only Americana music festival in Germany and attracts fans from all over Europe. All for the love of music, the Static Roots Festival is independent, non-commercial, non-funded.
After putting on the first live music shows in 2006, festival director Dietmar Leibecke in 2007 created a house concert series at „Raumfahrtzentrum Saarner Kuppe“ in Muelheim a. d. Ruhr. German music magazine „Folker“ called it „one of Germany’s most successful house concert series“. Celebrating the tenth anniversary (and some other personal anniversaries as well), in 2016 Dietmar inaugurated the Static Roots Festival and calls it a natural development from the first public live music events and the house concert series.
The festival is taking place at Zentrum Altenberg in Oberhausen, a former zinc processing factory turned into a cultural center. Half of the audience hails from Germany, the other half comes from Ireland, England, Scotland, The Netherlands, France. There are also fans travelling over from Switzerland, Austria, Italy and Spain.
As the Static Roots Festival is a non-commercial festival, all proceeds of merch sales go straight to Doctors without Borders.
During the pandemic and due to the cancellation of house concerts and the festival in 2020 and 2021, the Static Roots Festival brought some new side projects into life:
With the “stay safe sessions“ musicians provided live recorded videos in the safe environment of their houses (https://staticrootsfestival.com/static-roots-festival-stay-safe-sessions/).
„Static Roots on Spotify“ provides Americana music playlists and an according blog with some explanations why these songs have been added to the playlists (https://staticrootsfestival.com/static-roots-on-spotify/).
Finally the „Static Roots Presents“ series is a direct successor of the house concert series at „Raumfahrtzentrum Saarner Kuppe“. Since house concerts are no option as long as the pandemic lasts, the Static Roots Festival is now organizing live music shows at different public venues (https://staticrootsfestival.com/static-roots-presents/).
