In 2003, at the age of 18 Karl Auckram began a Floor and Wall tiling apprenticeship with a tile store in his hometown of Invercargill. Karl enjoyed working with his hands, the creativeness that comes with tiling and the variety of styles, he soon become passionate about the trade and within 2 years he had completed his apprenticeship through BCITO.
With a housing boom happening in Queenstown, Karl moved there and continued to develop his skills. There he was privileged to work on many high-end residential projects. When the global financial crisis hit in 2007 and work became harder to find Karl decided to go on an OE.
Starting in Melbourne, Karl continued tiling and honing his skills whilst exploring the country. It was there he met his wife, an Austrian from Vienna. He soon found himself moving to Vienna. During this time, he grew as a floor and wall tiler. He learnt completely different tiling techniques and was forced into learning about technical specifications and industry standard documents related to the tiling trade. (In Austria it’s necessary not only to understand the theory of your chosen trade but also pass a test on it before starting a business. Mandatory knowledge theory tests in each trade raises the standard of trades-persons and reduces needless damage to clients homes.
In 2015, Karl his wife and son decided to leave Austria for the city of Christchurch. The rebuild was underway and with over a decade of experience as a tiler, Karl found employment easy but frustrated with the lack of competence of his employers.
So after all the years in the trade, it was time to take the plunge into self-employment and Regal Tiling was incorporated.
With the understanding from training in Austria and time on the tools in different countries, Regal Tiling started with strong foundations. They have a strong team of tilers, some who have been tiling for many years and others completing their apprenticeships. The knowledge and training are passed on to all employees from Karl who is still very hands-on in the company.
