Our coffee beans are wood-roasted, using solar dried Cornish oak which is sourced locally from woodlands across the county. This allows us to support other local enterprises whilst also being mindful of our surrounding environment and maintaining sustainable practices, which are key aspects of our business ethos. Coffee wood-roasting is the age-old method for roasting coffee beans, and began to fall out of fashion in the late 1800s and early 1900s due to the rise of gas and electric power, and the opportunities for efficiency these types of power provided. The ease of gas roasting has resulted in a reduced availability of wood-roasted coffees on the market today; we are one of very few businesses in the UK who offer this type of coffee. Roasting coffee using oak gives the beans a unique flavour profile, as the heat provided by wood has a higher moisture content than gas, which allows the beans to maintain more of their natural oils and flavour; the risk of burning the beans is also lessened, reducing the possibility of bitterness. The process of wood-roasting and it’s connection to the history of coffee allows not only for a more organic experience, but also to focus on producing small batches of high quality coffee with distinct and diverse flavours. Sourcing a range of single origin and speciality coffees from all over the world is also a key element of ensuring we continue to offer new and exciting coffees to our customers, by carefully selecting beans which will have their natural characteristics enhanced by our 1950s wood roaster, as well as staying up to date with the ever-changing trends and demands of the industry. Overall, we aim to provide a fresh take on wood-roasted coffee in the hope of changing perceptions about the process and how it affects the flavour of the beans, with a focus on sustainable practices and low environmental impact, which can be seen in every aspect of our business practices, from the roasting method to the reusable and recyclable packaging we use.
Resident potter Lucy Brown designs and creates hundreds of unique pieces, ranging from tumblers and espresso cups, to plates and bowls, to vases and even buttons, key rings and jewellery, each one entirely bespoke. Each individual item is hand thrown using black stoneware clay, with a focus on functional and practical use, executed with beautiful yet simple design and great skill. Every signature piece has its own set of characteristics in terms of shape, size, colour and texture, and are all made in the studio here at Potterbeans with a great deal of care and attention to detail. The turquoise glaze used to decorate each piece varies in colour depending on where it is placed in the kiln, but is intended to give the pottery a volcanic island feel.
