The company was founded in 2014 by entrepreneurial brothers Keval Dattani, Kunal Dattani and Savan Dattani. It specialises in products for the grooming, styling, and maintaining of facial hair, operating online and across the United Kingdom in partnership with High Street retailers. Over the last few years of business, it has sold to over 500,000 bearded bros in 78 countries around the world, exporting 40% of it’s products sold internationally with distribution hubs based in the UK, Germany, Cyprus & USA.
The beard care and grooming products retailer’s ecommerce journey, has snowballed from humble beginnings and here’s how it all started … For some brothers, sibling rivalry ends in childhood especially when there is no longer a need to fight over who gets the front seat of the car or who can climb a tree the fastest. For brothers Keval, Kunal and Savan Dattani, this rivalry continued well into their adulthood … with a Movember challenge to see which brother could grow the best facial hair.
Surprisingly, they faced many problems … Keval had a wild and unruly beard, Kunal had a terrible itch and Savan had a patchy beard. From having these problems and finding no reputable solutions on the market, they decided to create products that would solve this mass problem for individuals growing a beard. With limited experience and £750 between them, they set out to create remedies to tame, soothe and help grow their beards and help others in similar positions. Fast forward to 2022, Mo Bros had now become the UK’s leading online male grooming retailer, that specialises in beards and moustaches. On December 26th, 2017, the Dattani’s appeared on the BBC show Dragon’s Den in a bid to secure investment for Mo Bros. The brothers asked for an investment of £150,000 in return for a 5% equity stake in the business. After delivering their pitch, the brothers received offers from Deborah Meaden, Tej Lalvani, Peter Jones CBE and Jenny Campbell before accepting joint investment from Tej Lalvani and Peter Jones of £75,000 and 10% of the company each. Their Dragons Den appearance saw the company achieve mainstream recognition and press coverage in The Telegraph, Leicester Mercury, The Express and BBC Radio. The company also had secured partnerships with ASOS, Debenhams, Next, British Airways, Menkind, Thomas Cook, Virgin Atlantic, Oman Air, KLM, Etihad Airways and Harding Retail. Working closely with charities, in 2017 Mo Bro’s was the first company in the world to employ men for stress therapy, by creating pop-up beard-stroking stations in retail centres. The aim of the campaign was to raise money for charity and to de-stress shoppers during the festive period, with profits from each £5 session, going directly to the charity. They received over 5,500 responses, earning mass recognition from the BBC, Metro, The Independent, Mail Online, The Mirror, UNILAD and LADbible. The story was shared 12,000 times on social media, with a global reach of over a 125 million views in 7 days.
The success of the campaign had helped the company raise money to combat homelessness. As well as this, their Behind the Beard Project had allowed them to work closely with Leicester-based employers and YMCA Leicester, in order to help homeless people back into employment.
