The Beginning of M&M Control: The month of August marks M&M’s corporate anniversary. In 1984, partners Rich Murov and Tim McNamara were working for an industrial distributor at the time. They knew that they could provide better, personalized customer service, competitive pricing, and superior product knowledge if they ventured out on their own. Rich was fresh from working as an application engineer with Powers Process Controls and was fortunate enough to convince Powers to give them a shot as a distributor.

It was the days of bag phones and only the very “privileged” or larger, more established outfits had computers. The partners modified a portable bag phone and put it in a briefcase. They had clipboards for inventory and worked out of Rich’s garage. For them it was pounding on doors and non-stop customer contact. Every penny made went into buying inventory, expanding the empire. They had second jobs after working 10-12 hour days, convinced they had the world by the tail.

For years, Rich and Tim concentrated on adding lines, inventory, and personnel, and before long expanded the business from the garage into a distribution and workshop facility. In 1990, Paul Fionda joined the team when the partners enticed him away from a vendor where he was building, troubleshooting, and repairing instrumentation. Rich and Tim knew they had something special when they hired that kid, and they were right. Paul’s loyalty, dedication, and drive were ultimately rewarded when he earned the prestige of becoming partner and president of the company today. These days management is still working 10-12 hour days but are fortunate enough not to have to have second jobs. Simpler times . . . well, maybe.

There have been plenty of changes since 1984, but M&M’s original formula has not changed. All in all, it has been a good run, and they continue the tradition by grooming the next generation, passing along the values M&M holds dear, with pride in themselves as a specialty line distributor that goes above and beyond for its customers.
