I am particularly interested in the way societal expectations mould us into gender conforming ways of behaviour. I draw on my experience as a woman and a mother, and resultantly most of my work is about childhood and womanhood. Recently I have been exploring narratives within traditional fairy tales and ancient Greek mythology and interpreting these themes through a feminist lens. I am a passionate advocate of women’s issues and gender equality, which is a constant theme in my work. I also write about art and greek mythology on my artist blog.
My artwork utilises pattern through the application of stencils, printed fabric or decorative paper. I have an extensive collection of patterned fabrics and papers. My attraction to pattern comes from my love of order (I’m also an accountant), but more importantly I like the flat, decorative element it adds. It also gives the work a feminine feel.
