Jo’s Therapy

Now solely a private practice owner, Jo offers psychotherapy and counselling services to people in Chislehurst, Sidcup and online. Rooms are private and well-appointed and offer a safe space for clients to think about and explore their difficulties.

Jo has experience in hotel management, living and working in America for a period of time, and experience in corporate event management for a global corporation. Jo has always worked with people and her drive to understand people better led her to study a psychology degree. This led to a Masters degree in Therapeutic Counselling.

Jo works compassionately but will challenge clients to explore difficult feelings, think about issues from different perspectives, and work out what barriers are getting in the way of change.

Jo is passionate about clients feeling they can live authentically. This means living in a way that is true to who they are. This first requires that clients know who they are and this is often a very tricky question.

Jo works with clients on any issue, but finds living authentically is often broken down into four key areas:

1) Anger management – working with clients on identifying and acknowledging their anger, thinking about their triggers, thinking about where anger belongs, not judging their anger, and working out alternative strategies for dealing with anger. Expressing angry feelings in a way that is authentic and respectful to oneself and the other person is the goal.

2) Self-esteem and self-care – working hard to get clients feeling that they deserve to be looking after themselves better. When clients feel confident in their own worth and abilities, it becomes so much easier to practice good self-care. And good self-care is the foundation to wellbeing and maintaining good mental health.

3) Healthy boundaries in relationships – working hard to get clients feeling that they deserve to be treated in acceptable ways, with respect. This requires clients to respect themselves and identify where their boundaries need to be in individual relationships or situations. This also requires looking at the potential consequences of a)not putting boundaries in place, and b)difficult reactions from others when one puts boundaries in place.

4) Identity – working with clients to understand how they see themselves and how they want to present themselves to the world. Clients often experience huge life changes which have an impact on their identity. Clients struggle to understand that they cannot just ‘go back to how thing were before’. This is because change has happened, but we can look at the positives and choose how to move forward in a way that feels authentic.

Jo is also passionate about extolling the benefits of people coming to know and understand themselves better. Without this, one cannot live authentically. As a result, Jo is embarking on a new project to write a series of Therapy Journal workbooks to help as many people as possible feel the benefits of therapeutic insight.
