Holistic Health and Living

Many doctors of all stripes are now offering holistic treatment options, too.

At Holistic Health and Living, our mission is to inspire a community toward living naturally with minimum use of pharmaceutical medicine (only as needed). Our goal is to treat the whole person so they can achieve optimal health.

The wellness model of care treats the mind, body, and spirit as one interconnected system. It focuses on prevention, not just treatment, and provides a multidisciplinary approach that goes beyond traditional medicine by addressing physical, mental, and environmental factors that affect overall health.

We believe in treating you as part of your family unit — because when you feel good physically and mentally, it has an impact on everyone around you! Our holistic approach includes information regarding nutritional counseling for children or adults; behavioral therapy for children with special needs (ADD/ADHD); massage therapy for relaxation or stress reduction; biofeedback training for chronic pain management; yoga classes; meditation; and individualized care plans developed by naturopathic practitioners.

Your health is determined by many factors – not just illness or injury. The way you live your life can have an impact on your overall wellbeing, not just when you’re sick or hurt. A holistic approach looks at all aspects of your life – including relationships with family members and friends, work life, diet and exercise habits, and mental health issues such as stress management techniques or meditation techniques – to determine what’s preventing you from living as well as possible.

While holistic medicine itself is not a specific treatment, it’s often used in conjunction with complementary treatments such as acupuncture and herbal medicines.

Conventional medicine is based on the idea that everything has a cause-and-effect relationship to other things. When you have a symptom, it’s because something has gone wrong with your body.

For example, if you get a headache then someone will want to know what’s causing the headache or what made it happen? Did you drink too much wine last night? Did you skip breakfast this morning? Did you eat too much spicy food at lunch yesterday?

Holistic medicine approaches healing from a different perspective: each person is unique so their symptoms are also unique! Unlike conventional medicine, which seeks to separate the body into various parts or systems and dissecting each of those systems (the digestive system, respiratory system, circulatory system etc.) holistic practitioners try to view the body as an integrated whole and make recommendations for treatments that address all aspects of the patient’s physical mental and spiritual health.

Natural living is all about making your home and lifestyle as environmentally friendly as possible. It can be tough to do all these things on your own, but there are lots of resources available online. Some ideas for getting started include:

Using a water filter instead of purchasing bottled water

Washing clothes in cold water and line-drying them outside when possible

Buying organic food when possible

In addition to hands-on treatments given by doctors or licensed practitioners, holistic medicine also encourages patients to play an active role in their own health by taking responsibility for their own diets, stress levels and lifestyle choices. This can include everything from meditation and exercise to spiritual practices like prayer or meditation.

Diet: Eating healthy food is vital for good health; so much so that nutritionists often refer to “eating right” as one of the best ways to prevent illness. The types of foods you eat can have a significant impact on how well your body functions, so it’s important that you choose foods that provide the nutrients needed for optimal health and energy levels throughout the day.* Exercise: The benefits of regular physical activity are numerous—they reduce stress levels, improve sleep quality and increase strength.* Sleep: Sleep should be considered just as important—if not more important—than diet when it comes to maintaining good health.* Positive Thinking: When we’re stressed or anxious about something that happened during our day (or even from earlier), it’s easy for those worries/thoughts/feelings take over our minds until all we can think about is what was bothering us earlier.*
