We don’t mass breed chickens because we feel that giving them more space and enrichment results in happier birds. It also means they have been subjected to less stress. Less stress = less illness.

Our story started in 2008 when Julie cared for a friends chickens whilst they went on holiday. We enjoyed the process so much, we invested in some of our own chickens. As chickens are addictive, we started to become collectors of different chicken breeds, and different egg colours. There are over 300 different breeds of chicken so we had a lot of choice. The next step in this addiction was to hatch our own so we obtained an incubator and the rest is history. With nowhere to put our expanding flock, the logical step was to offer the “extras” for sale.

Consequently, we are now officially a chicken breeder. It gives us the opportunity to indulge our passion for these wonderful creatures and yet also keep our own flock as a manageable size.

We have learned a lot along the way and made lots of mistakes, so now we have used this valuable experience to expand into teaching others about how to look after chickens in the garden. As Julie’s background is in IT support, she has set up our website and also designed online courses for those wishing to learn how to keep chickens at home. Our online chicken keeping courses are becoming rather popular and our portfolio of courses is increasing.

Holiday hen boarding is a new service we are offering as it enables people to make sure their chickens are well cared for while they are on holiday.

Hedgerow Henporium now has the ability to supply poultry equipment, which includes feeders, drinkers, chicken coops, poultry feed and poultry bedding. We have become a one-stop-shop for all things chickens related. Despite all the strings to our bow, we are still very much a small family affair and are happy to remain that way.
