Golf Sustainable

Golf Sustainable was founded in 2019 by Petra and Thomas Himmel. Petra Himmel is an international sport-writer, Thomas Himmel a golf course architect.
The platform Golf Sustainable is based on a pure journalist approach, and covers all topics around climate change and golf, greenkeeping, water management, CO2-reducation, sustainable economics in golf or the use of pesticides. The aim of Golf Sustainable is to provide a platform on which information on the subject can be collected in English as well as in German. We focus on Europe and Northern America. At the same time, it is also important for us to take a look beyond the borders to get to know examples from all countries. How are Arizona greenkeepers dealing with water shortages? To what extent do Scottish links golf courses preserve important stretches of coastline? What effect do golf courses have on bee protection in Tyrol, Ticino or Bavaria? How can golfers and golf courses learn from experiences from other projects? Golf Sustainable collects and describes best-practice-examples.
Golf Sustainable is diverted in three parts: News, International News and Club News. The News part concentrates on Germany, Austria and Switzerland. International News covers the rest of the world. The club news section is reserved for all projects from single golf-clubs, which try to achieve more sustainability.
Golf Sustainable also works together with the golf federations of Bavaria, Hesse and Baden Württemberg to report on their efforts in terms of sustainability.
Golf Sustainable has build up a network with many international specialists on sports and sustainability like Ecoathletes, Sports for Future or GEO.
Thomas Himmel has designed numerous golf courses in Europe. He is an expert in golf course design, sustainable watermanagement and construction. He offers new views on irrigation and use of land, shows how to lower maintenance costs and review your greenkeeping.
Petra Himmel has worked in journalism over 25 years for some of the biggest newspapers in Germany and Switzerland like Süddeutsche Zeitung, Neue Züricher Zeitung, Welt am Sonntag or Tagesspiegel. She wants to deliver reliable journalism with interviews, background-stories and live-content. She visits many of the courses and golf events herself and discovers new aspects of sustainability on golf courses.
Golf Sustainable started as a page in German three years ago, but also offers in English version since 2022. It is present on Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn.
