Gardens of the Sun

It’s founded by Meri, a former sustainability consultant from the Netherlands. She uses jewelry as a vehicle to reduce mercury pollution, plant trees and support indigenous women. Gardens of the Sun is certified carbon neutral and has planted over 55,000 trees.

Where other jewelers buy gold from unknown sources, possibly funding Russia’s war on Ukraine, Gardens of the Sun’s gold is fully traceable.

They partner with 23 artisanal indigenous women miners in Indonesian Borneo. These women receive a premium for their pledge against the use of mercury and cyanide. In the past three years, they’ve avoided the release of an estimated 44 kg of mercury into the world.

Meri explains why they focus on changing supply chains: “We could have just said our jewelry is 100% ethical, pinkie promise. We could have bought recycled gold, and stones from areas where mercury pollution, corruption and human rights abuses aren’t rampant. But absolutely nothing would have changed for millions of artisanal miners in countries like Indonesia. So we’re deliberately staying in Indonesia, working where mercury pollution is the worst, and where diamonds and sapphires are mined solely by artisanal miners. That’s where the miners need us most. That’s where we’re driving change.”

Will you go for salt and pepper diamonds from Canada and Australia? Or do you prefer antique cut diamonds from artisanal miners in Indonesia? Or perhaps colorful sapphires mined by indigenous Dayak people?

Create your own birthstone jewelry using recycled silver or design your dream engagement ring using their signature ethical gold. Gardens of the Sun lets you choose, and have a better impact.
