Devon Pens

I still now, many years later, use some of the same tools and often think back to him using them. I have made the usual bowls etc but ultimately I love making pens, they are each so individual and you never know quite what you will find inside each piece of wood. I tend to use a wax finish on my pens, as I like to feel the texture of the wood.
I was lucky enough to be invited to make the pens for the leaders table at the G7 summit in Cornwall. Each of the leaders attending had a presentation box with a fountain pen and ink included. The pens were made from recycled oak fingerboard signpost from the South West Coast path.
Making pens that have a story is my true passion, I love the idea of holding history in your hand. To this end I try to source as many different woods as I can that have either a historic origin or from a specific location. The historic woods include wood from a Spitfire propellor, old railway carriages, Various Royal Navy ships and wood from Gun carriages to name but a few. I also have wood from trees that grew at a number of National trust locations as well as across Dartmoor.
I am also happy to make a pen from a piece of wood that has meaning to a customer. I have used wood from Grammas old dining table, wedding decorations and trees from childhood homes. Any bespoke work of this type is interesting and opens up the opportunity to work with different woods and some lovely people.
