CalcuNation was started in 2011 as a hobby website. It soon grew to more than just a hobby. Jon Richardson, the website founder, was in engineering sales and worked with many customers on how to calculate tractive effort, hydraulic horsepower, torque, etc. Because of his career, there was a lot of evenings spent in hotel rooms.
At one point in 2010, Jon was working with a customer who had developed a tracked rock crushing machine. They were having problems with calculating the tractive effort needed for the machine design to work in a quarry. Jon thought that providing a calculator for the customer to experiment with his design would be useful. He also thought that he could do some work in his off-time to try to create a website that would allow his customer to use the calculator, online.
Well, once Jon started down this path, he had to create simpler calculators to build up coding experience and to help with calculating different problems for his customers. After months, Jon had many calculator pages and a working website that was rudimentary, but worked.
As it turns out, the math part for the online calculators was easier than being proficient at creating a website. But, Jon still works on the site to make improvements, make it mobile-friendly, and dabbles a bit in SEO to make it more available for others to find on search engines
