Altus rejects superficial, event-driven approaches to fitness. Instead, the facility emphasizes the long-term process of becoming stronger, healthier, and more capable in all areas of life. This philosophy aligns with the Human Performance Optimization model: optimizing the entire human system—body, mind, and spirit—not for one specific event, but for all of life’s demands. The belief system guiding Altus also stresses: • Professional-level access for everyday people—the same quality of coaching found in professional sports and special operations training communities should be accessible to all ). • Holistic development—true fitness includes movement quality, metabolic health, mental resilience, stress regulation, and the daily habits that support them. • Science-based coaching—every program is grounded in biomechanics, physiology, performance psychology, and stress adaptation principles. • Inclusive performance—whether someone is a 77-year-old beginner or a highly trained athlete, everyone can participate, progress, and succeed ). Unlike mainstream group fitness or traditional CrossFit models, Altus training is intentionally built to improve the entire human system, not just a workout score or daily performance metric. The Story of Altus and Its Founder Altus was founded by U.S. Army Ranger veteran John Rossmiller, a Pittsburgh native with a lifelong passion for movement, human performance, and service. John served seven years with the 75th Ranger Regiment, deploying four times before being medically retired due to injuries sustained during airborne training ). Before his military service, John spent six years as a performance coach, played indoor football, and was a collegiate athlete at Colgate University ). His coaching certifications include NSCA-CSCS, NASM-PES, NASE-SES, and multiple specialty credentials across strength, conditioning, kettlebell training, combat sports, and more. During his time in the Rangers, John served as a Human Performance Optimization Coach (HPOC) under the Ranger Athlete Warrior Program, blending tactical demands, sports science, and high-performance coaching to prepare soldiers for extreme physical and mental challenges ). After leaving the military and returning to Pittsburgh for his MBA, John struggled to find a facility that offered the comprehensive environment he was accustomed to—world-class coaching, supportive teammates, diverse training tools, and a community driven by purpose rather than membership fees. Instead, he found that most gyms were fragmented, niche-focused, or lacked the camaraderie and accountability he valued ). This gap inspired John to build Altus-HPO, a facility designed to bring a premium level of service and coaching to everyday people who also want to perform better in life—not just in sport. The vision was to create a fitness movement rooted in personal development, mental and physical resilience, and the pursuit of ones fullest potential. Today, Altus-HPO stands as the embodiment of that mission—a place where people become stronger, healthier, and more capable through a structured, science-based, community-driven process.
