Allard Dental cares for smiles. Allard Dental Centre helps families maintain healthy smiles through education, early detection, and accessible care. When Dr. Fatemeh Basij, DDS, took over Allard Dental Centre in 2018, she wanted to do more than just run a clinic. She wanted to build a place where families could feel cared for, understood, and supported in every stage of life. Dr. Basij might have just achieved that. “Helping people care for their oral health has always been my biggest motivation,” Dr. Basij said. For Dr. Basij and her team, preventive care is more than a dental philosophy — it’s a responsibility. “Dentistry lets me combine science and artistry while making a direct impact on people’s lives.” From her earliest training, Dr. Basij was drawn to the idea that dental care could improve more than a smile, it could improve a person’s confidence, comfort, and overall health. “Seeing patients gain confidence in their smile—and knowing their overall health improves because of it—is what inspired me to pursue this profession,” she said. More than anything, Allard Dental Centre aims to keep patients healthy through prevention. The clinic regularly educates patients on daily habits that protect oral health, such as brushing technique, nutrition, and early detection of issues like gum disease. Regular cleanings and checkups help avoid expensive and painful dental work later on. Allard Dental’s general manager Majid Afyounian said if patients receive the right type of care, they aren’t likely to end up in painful or costly treatments in the future. The team also works to make dental care accessible for more families, especially through the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP), the new federal program that helps cover dental costs for families with household incomes under $90,000. “For families earning less than $35,000 a year, the plan covers 100 per cent of costs,” Afyounian explained. By promoting awareness of the plan and helping patients understand their eligibility, Allard Dental hopes to ensure no one avoids care because of cost. The clinic was among the first in Langley to adopt the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP), now serving hundreds of local families. While some offices charge patients the difference between the federal fee guide and the BC Dental Association’s rates, Allard Dental does not [except treatments rendered by specialist]. To further ease access, the clinic offers senior discounts to patients without coverage, a 20% discount for post-secondary students, and in-house payment plans. After earning her Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree—a designation that includes advanced surgical training—she spent years providing extensive oral surgeries combined with general dentistry. Dr. Basij also teaches the next generation of dentists as a clinical instructor at the University of British Columbia (UBC), a position she has held for 10 years. “Being a UBC Clinical Instructor for 10 years keeps me connected with the latest research and technology,” she explained. At Allard Dental Centre, that connection shows up in the tools and techniques used every day—from digital 3D scanners, X-rays and intera oral cameras to modern treatment planning systems that improve accuracy and comfort. Through a mentorship program provided by Dr. Basij, UBC dental students also visit the clinic to gain real-world experience. “This exchange of ideas—between students eager to learn and experienced professionals applying advanced techniques—creates a dynamic environment that continually pushes us to integrate the latest advancements into patient care,” Dr. Basij said. While technology is important, compassion is what keeps people coming back. “One of the most memorable moments is helping anxious patients leave with a genuine smile,” said Dr. Basij. “Watching the transformation from fear and hesitation to trust and relief is very meaningful for me and my team.” For patients who still feel anxious about dental visits, Dr. Basij also offers oral sedation dentistry, allowing them to receive treatment comfortably and safely.” “The most rewarding part is seeing our patients’ happiness and confidence when they leave our office,” she said. Community involvement is another cornerstone of the clinic’s philosophy. Every year, Allard Dental Centre donates about $10,000 to local initiatives, including the Langley Food Bank, wildfire relief funds, a Christmas toy drive, and sponsors a local girls’ softball team. Allard Dental also supports local youth by awarding two $1,500 merit- or needs-based grants each year to Langley high school students pursuing post-secondary studies in oral health fields such as certified dental assisting or dental hygiene. The program is managed through the Langley School District Foundation. “We love supporting the next generation,” Afyounian said. That commitment to care, paired with Allard Dental Centre’s warm and welcoming approach, has earned the clinic multiple recognitions and awards. The practice was named Langley’s Best Dental Office by Readers Choice Awards three years in a row — 2023, 2024, and 2025 — and was a finalist for the Langley Chamber of Commerce Business Excellence Awards in two categories: Spirit of Community and Best Small Business two years in a row. “ We don’t just provide dental care — we build long-term relationships with families in our community, and that is what we are proud of” said Dr. Basij.
