In the last 20 years or so, the world of coffee has undergone an incredible renaissance of sorts. Since coffee became a globally traded commodity, it has largely been viewed as a dark and bitter caffeinated drink that is made palatable by milk & sugar or endured by “manly men”. All this changed in the early 2000s. When the world started paying attention to the details such as the farming and processing of the coffee, the roasting of the coffee and the brewing of the coffee, we realised that coffee could be sweet, creamy, chocolatey, fruity, decadent and delicious. This was the beginning of third-wave coffee culture and the advent of a new type of coffee: specialty coffee.

Although the groundwork for this shift in coffee culture began in the 2000s, it wasn’t until more recent years that it gained major popularity around the world. Soma Coffee Company was founded in 2017 with one goal: to bring third-wave coffee culture and the wonderful experience of specialty coffee to the people of Cork City. Soma had humble beginnings with a small cafe in Cork City centre that served coffee from the top coffee roasters in Ireland and around Europe. With only a handful of cafes in Cork embracing quality coffee, Soma was met with a roaring success – the people of Cork and Ireland were hungry for great quality coffee!

This success led to continued growth and a little over a year later, Soma Coffee Company installed a 6kg roaster in the back of their shop. This gave Soma complete control over their offering and allowed them to expand into wholesale. Today, Soma Coffee Company has multiple cafes around Ireland and you can find their coffee in specialty coffee and quality-focused cafes nationwide. Soma’s approach has always been quality focussed and they pay attention to every detail of a coffee beans journey. When it comes to sourcing coffee, Soma looks for exciting, unique and delicious coffee, but it doesn’t end there. They also care about the farmers and producers who put all the hard work into your delicious cup. For this reason, all our coffee is single-origin, traceable and ethically sourced. When the coffee lands at HQ, it is roasted with the same care and attention to detail, but when it comes to coffee roasting, taste is king. The aim is to create a roast profile that allows the natural deliciousness of the coffee we source to shine. There is only one way to do this – roast, taste, make changes and roast again.

The last step of the journey of a coffee bean is in the brewing. This is the part that makes people fall in love with coffee. At Soma there is a constant pursuit for a perfect cup of coffee. Baristas fondly refer to this as the elusive “God shot” – the perfect espresso. Through the use of state of the art technology, Everything is measured and constantly tweaked in order to serve you the best coffee we can! It doesn’t end there though. Although Soma Coffee Company has grown to a budding roastery, cafe and wholesale business, the humble goal of bringing amazing quality and interesting speciality coffee to the people of Cork City (and beyond to coffee lovers of the world) remains the same. At the end of the day, Soma is made up of passionate coffee lovers who want the world to fall in love with specialty coffee the same way they did.
