As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.searchenginejournal.com\/google-fact-check-ai-content-before-publishing\/591782\/\">reported by Search Engine Journal<\/a>, two things changed:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Three new sentences.<\/strong> Google explains that AI models &#8220;don&#8217;t retrieve facts, but predict a likely sequence of words,&#8221; so their output can contain errors, which it calls hallucinations. It then says it is &#8220;critical to manually factcheck and review all AI-generated content&#8221; before publishing.<\/li><li><strong>A reworded line on metadata.<\/strong> The page already mentioned metadata. It now says the review &#8220;also applies&#8221; to it: your page title, meta description (the summary that can show under your link on Google), structured data (code that describes your business to search engines) and image alt text (the written description of a photo).<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Search Engine Journal reports the rest of the page is unchanged. Google&#8217;s update note says the goal was to bring the doc in line with what it presents at developer events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What&#8217;s confirmed and what isn&#8217;t<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Confirmed: the new wording and the October 1 date, both on Google&#8217;s own page. Not confirmed: any new ranking penalty. Neither Google nor the coverage describes one. <a href=\"https:\/\/seroundtable.com\/google-updates-ai-content-guidelines-factcheck-review-42217.html\">Search Engine Roundtable<\/a> wondered whether the change is linked to September&#8217;s spam update, but that is speculation. The existing warning stays in place: mass-producing AI pages that add no value may break Google&#8217;s spam rules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why it matters for a small business<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>AI tools are good at sounding sure of themselves, and they can invent a service you don&#8217;t offer, a price you don&#8217;t charge or a license you don&#8217;t hold. On a small business site, that kind of mistake costs you customer trust long before it costs you anything in search.
