Robots.txt is a small text file on your website that tells search engines and AI crawlers what they’re allowed to read. An October 1 analysis of Cloudflare data by TechnologyChecker found site owners are writing more specific rules for AI bots. OpenAI’s training crawler, GPTBot, now shows up in about 7.7% of “allow” rules, triple its share a year earlier. Diib doesn’t record which bots a website names, but it does record whether the file passes Google’s Lighthouse validity check.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Diib compared about 92,000 websites’ most recent robots.txt check (July 1 to October 6, 2026) with their AI visibility scans from September 14 to October 2, 2026. Parked domains were left out. About 7% of the sites had a robots.txt file flagged with errors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A broken robots.txt file can be a sign of a site that isn’t being maintained in other ways too.
