You can write URLs by hand, or let your website builder or hosting service create them for you. For example, if you want to send a document to someone, you can share a URL that points to the file. A search engine results page also has its own URL. URLs are just as useful when you want to link files into a web page or share a page in an email.

What are the three kinds of URLs?

The three kinds are full (absolute) URLs, relative URLs, and root-relative URLs, which start with a slash and leave out the domain name.

Fully Qualified URI. http://www.yoursite.com/path/to/file.mp3. Root-relative URLs are shortcuts that leave out the “http” and the domain name. The URI standard, RFC 3986, calls a reference that starts with a single slash an “absolute-path reference.”

URLs are extremely useful for navigating these pages. Moreover, networks generally develop web pages that don’t require additional technical knowledge or expertise to navigate. A human-readable, semantically accurate URL provides a clear idea to the user of what the website is all about and will help them get the desired information quickly and easily. There are many websites, which provide this convenience to the user. There is no single official URL length limit. The HTTP standard, RFC 9110, recommends that browsers and servers support URLs of at least 8,000 octets (about 8,000 plain characters), and Chrome caps URLs at 2MB. For people, a short URL of a few words is far easier to read and share. Some websites will provide a link to the human-readable, semantically accurate URL at the bottom of the page. Check out these examples by Moz:

What is a human-readable URL?

A human-readable URL uses plain words that describe the page, like yoursite.com/blue-running-shoes, instead of ID numbers like yoursite.com/p?id=8372. Google recommends using readable words rather than long ID numbers in your URLs.

A human-readable, semantically accurate URL provides a clear idea to the user of what is being communicated by the website. This URL type helps users get a better idea of what information is on a website when searching for something or typing in a phrase. A readable URL also helps the user find their way around the website. Some websites built with advanced technology will provide the user with a clear idea of what is available on the website, without any need to type anything. For example, if a website is built using a database, then the user will get a clear idea of what kind of data is available in the database without needing to type it out. A well-labeled site lets the user reach the data they need without typing extra information.

However, it is not only the data that a website provides that is vital, but also the language used by the website is just as important. A website needs to provide the user with the most basic and necessary information that he needs. Clear language, in your pages and your URLs, gives users an easy-to-read format they find comfortable to work with. Plain wording makes it easy for the user to understand the information provided on the website. The user will also get a better idea about the products and services available on the website without difficulty.

Do readable URLs help with SEO?

Readable URLs help a little with SEO (search engine optimization), mostly because people can see what a page is about before they click.

Humanized URLs give search engines and people a quick clue about what a page covers. People are more likely to find and remember a page whose address is easy to read and type. Treat a humanized URL as a minor ranking factor, not a shortcut to higher rankings.

Does URL Length Limit SEO?

So how long can a URL be? URL length matters for both people and search engine optimization. Technically, a URL can be very long: the HTTP standard recommends support for at least 8,000 octets. For people, shorter is better, because a short URL is easier to read, share and show in search results. Keep the path to a few lowercase words separated by hyphens, since Google recommends hyphens over underscores. A relevant word or two from your topic in the URL helps people see what the page covers. Meta tags do not belong in a URL. Meta tags go in the HTML code of your page, where they describe the page to search engines. The chart below comes from a Backlinko study that compared URL length with position on a search engine results page (SERP).

Readable URLs will not guarantee a higher ranking, but there are a couple of things you can do. If an existing page has an unclear URL, you can change it to something more readable. Most website builders let you do this. When you change a URL, add a permanent (301) redirect from the old address so visitors and existing links still reach the page. A readable URL is easier for people to remember and share. Keep your main topic phrase in the URL so people can tell at a glance what the page covers.

What makes a URL SEO-friendly?

An SEO-friendly URL is short, uses readable words separated by hyphens, and drops parameters that don’t change the page content, which Google’s URL structure guide also recommends.

Well-crafted URLs provide both search engines and humans an easy-to-understand indication of a particular website’s purpose. When searching for something in the search engines, you’re basically bombarded with irrelevant information. It’s almost impossible to figure out what people want to see with all of the clutter. Search engines are designed to sort through this mess and return relevant results. You get the best results by providing information pertinent to the search engine. For example:

Search engines are utterly great at sorting through the information provided to them, but not everyone has the same set of skills. So what should you do to make your site look professional without being overwhelming? The first step is to think about your site’s content. Do you have useful information about your products or services? Are there links pointing back to your home page? Search engines can treat useful content and links from other sites as signs of trust.

To get the most from good URLs, pair them with useful content that answers your customers’ questions. Skip old tactics like mass article submission and directory links: Google’s spam policies list low-quality directory links as link spam. No technique can guarantee a high spot in the search engine results pages (SERPs).

Why can a readable URL work as its own anchor text?

When someone pastes a bare link into a post or email, the URL itself becomes the clickable text (the anchor text), so a readable URL tells readers what the page is about.

Well-written URLs help, but they are not the main factor in getting your website listed on search engines. A readable URL often contains the same words people search for. When a URL is copied and pasted as a link, its words act as the anchor text and give search engines extra context about the linked page. Here is a great example of this:

Humanized URLs can also earn more clicks when people share them, because readers can see where a link goes before they click. Site owners often copy and paste URLs into their blogs and websites. For example, a blog that links to its own posts with clear URLs makes those posts easier for search engines to find.

When you share your pages on your own blog, in articles or on social media, a readable URL makes the link look trustworthy. You can also list related URLs at the bottom of your articles so readers can find more help easily. Keep in mind that well-written URLs are only one of many factors in getting your website listed on search engines.

What are Google search URL parameters?

Google search URL parameters are the pieces after the question mark in a Google results address, such as q= for the search term, and they describe the search, not your website.

A Google search URL is the address of a Google results page, not something placed on your website. Each time a visitor types in a search term, such as “running shoes near me,” Google builds a results URL that includes the search term and other settings. A Google search URL will usually contain many different parameters. Each parameter tells Google how to run or display that search, such as the language or the page of results. Parameters on your own site’s URLs work the same way, and Google recommends trimming any parameters that don’t change the page content. Here is an example of a custom Google search page:

You don’t need a special template to create a URL. Your website builder or content management system (CMS) creates page URLs for you, and most let you edit the “slug,” the readable part at the end. Google Webmaster Tools is now called Google Search Console, and its URL Inspection tool shows information about Google’s indexed version of any page on your site.

Types of HTTP – Parameters:

HTTP Version

Uniform Resource Identifiers

Character Sets

Content Encodings

Media Types

Language Tags

HTTP parameters like these are technical settings your server and browser exchange, not things you add to a URL by hand. What shows up for your page in Google results is mainly its title and a short snippet, so choose a page title that is both descriptive and relevant. Write a meta description that relates to the specific page you are creating. It is usually best to use descriptive and keyword-rich titles. If the title has only one word, it may be better to find a more appropriate title and use it instead.

Can you increase the URL length in Internet Explorer?

No, Internet Explorer’s URL limit was built into the browser, and Microsoft ended support for Internet Explorer 11 on June 15, 2022, so the limits in modern browsers like Chrome and Edge are what matter now.

Internet Explorer had a much lower fixed URL limit than modern browsers, and users had no setting to raise it. Long URLs mostly come from data sent with the GET request method, which puts that data in the URL itself.

Definition box: What is the GET Request Method? GET is used to retrieve and request data from a specified resource in a server. GET is one of the most popular HTTP request techniques. In simple words, the GET method is used to retrieve whatever information is identified by the Request-URL.

If your URLs are long enough to hit a browser limit, the fix is on your side: shorten the URL, or send the data in the body of a POST request instead of in the URL. Servers can also refuse long URLs, and the HTTP standard (RFC 9110) gives them a status code for that, 414 (URI Too Long).

What is an OpenURL?

An OpenURL is a standard link format, used mostly by libraries, that packages the details of a citation, such as a book or article, so a library system can find the full text.

The OpenURL format is defined by the NISO Z39.88 standard. Library databases generate OpenURLs automatically from a bibliographic citation or record, so you rarely build one by hand. OpenURLs matter for library catalogs and research databases, not for a small business website.

How does an HTTP transaction work?

An HTTP transaction is one request from a browser to a web server and the one response the server sends back.

If you are looking to get into the world of working with the Internet, you probably want to know what an HTTP transaction starts with.

First off, a request is sent by a user or agent to an HTTP server.

Then, the server sends back a response, usually an HTML page, image or other file, with a status code such as 200 (OK) or 404 (Not Found).

The browser reads the response and displays the page.

Every request and response follows the same standard format, defined in the HTTP standard, RFC 9110.

What is the standard HTTP format? The HTTP standard describes what requests and responses should look like. A request has a method (such as GET), the URL, and headers, such as a Cookie header that carries login or shopping cart details. A response has a status code, headers and usually a body with the content.

If the request succeeds, the browser shows the content to the user. If the request fails, the server returns an error code, such as 414 when a URL is too long, and the browser shows an error page. Here is a simplified view of the request and response flow during an online purchase:

What is an interior gateway protocol?

An interior gateway protocol (IGP) is a set of rules that routers inside one network use to share routes with each other, and it has nothing to do with your URLs.

There are several interior gateway protocols, such as OSPF, each with its own way for routers in one network to share routes. In a web-based application, the communication between a browser and a server happens over HTTP or HTTPS, not a gateway protocol. Routing between separate networks, such as two internet providers, uses an exterior gateway protocol like the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP). For example:

A protocol is like a language that is used by both the internal and external software. Therefore, if you are not familiar with the language, you would not understand the protocol. There are many protocols for different purposes, such as HTTP, FTP, IMAP, POP, etc. Knowing which protocols your site uses, such as HTTPS for web pages, helps you ask your host the right security questions.

Security is a crucial aspect of any business. Routing protocols are run by your hosting company and internet provider, not by you. For a small business website, the security steps that matter most are using HTTPS, keeping your software updated and using strong passwords. Ask your hosting company what protection it provides for your site.

How can diib help you check your URLs?

diib monitors your site for technical SEO issues, such as broken pages, and gives you plain-English recommendations to fix them.

A humanized, readable URL makes it easier for people to click through to the page they want. diib members can ask diib’s growth experts about a clear URL structure for their business during diibLive office hours.
