It assumes you let a chatbot write a full article, then run the result through a “humanizer” tool or hand it to an editor to make it sound less robotic. That approach treats the problem as word choice. The real problem is substance: a draft built only from what the AI already knows has nothing in it that a reader, or an answer engine, can’t find somewhere else.

The better approach is to humanize while you write. You bring your experience, your customers’ questions, your numbers, and your opinions into the conversation with the AI before it writes a word, and you keep shaping the draft inside that same conversation. This guide shows you how, with prompts you can copy and data from diib’s database showing why generic content is losing ground.

Is AI-generated content bad for SEO?

No, AI-generated content is not bad for SEO by itself, and Google does not penalize a page just because AI helped write it. Google’s guidance on AI-generated content states that appropriate use of AI or automation is not against its guidelines. Google judges the page on whether it is helpful, not on how it was produced.

The research backs that up. An Ahrefs study of 600,000 top-ranking pages found that 86.5% contained some AI-generated content, and the correlation between AI use and ranking position was 0.011, which is effectively zero. Only 4.6% of the pages were pure AI, though. Most of the pages ranking well were a mix of human and AI work.

So “AI content is fine” is only partly true. AI content is fine when a person has put something into it that the AI could not produce alone. Google’s spam policies call out scaled content abuse, meaning many pages produced mainly to rank rather than to help, whether a person or a machine made them. Our guide on whether Google can tell if your content is AI-written covers detection in more detail.

Why do AI humanizer tools miss the point?

AI humanizer tools change the wording of a draft but cannot add the experience, data, or opinions that make content worth reading. A humanizer swaps synonyms, varies sentence length, and adds a few casual phrases so the text scores lower on an AI detector. The facts, examples, and structure stay exactly as generic as they were.

Fixing a finished AI draft by hand has the same weakness. An editor can make a bland article read smoothly, but rewriting sentences one by one is slow, and the editor is still polishing content that has no point of view. Ahrefs makes a similar argument in its piece on being asked to humanize AI content: rewriting raw AI output wastes a writer’s time and undercuts the efficiency AI was supposed to bring.

Where we part ways with that view is the fix. Writing everything by hand is not the only alternative. You can get the speed of AI and the substance of human writing at the same time, as long as the human input happens at the start of the process instead of the end.

What does diib data show about generic content in 2026?

diib data shows organic search traffic falling hardest in industries built on easily summarized information, while industries built on local, firsthand expertise held steady or grew. We compared organic search visits for the same 64,848 websites connected to diib through Google Analytics in April to June 2025 and April to June 2026. Each site needed at least 30 organic visits in the first period to be included.

Group

Sites

Median change in organic visits

Share of sites that grew

All sites

64,848

-6%

45%

News

736

-37%

31%

Education

814

-9%

44%

Oral and dental care

410

+8%

55%

Source: aggregated diib customer website data, Google Analytics organic search visits, Q2 2025 compared with Q2 2026.

The news sites in our data saw the median organic visits per quarter drop from about 7,200 to about 3,200. News and general explainer content is exactly the kind of information that AI Overviews and chatbots can summarize without sending a click. Dental sites went the other direction. A dental site’s best content is tied to a place, a team, specific procedures, and real patient questions, which is content an AI cannot write without the practice’s input.

This data shows a pattern, not proof of cause. Many things affect organic traffic, including seasonality, Google updates, and site changes. The pattern still matches what Google’s guide to helpful, people-first content says it rewards: content that shows first-hand experience and adds something beyond what already exists.

At the same time, answer engines have become a real traffic source. AI assistants (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, and Copilot) appeared among a site’s top five referral sources for 8% of diib-connected sites in April to June 2024. Two years later, in April to June 2026, that share was 64%, across 55,495 sites. News sites went from 8% to 63% and dental sites from 5% to 66%. AI tools now send visitors to most of the websites diib tracks, and they cite pages that contain specific, quotable information. Our guide to answer engine optimization (AEO) versus SEO explains how those citations work.

How do you humanize AI content while you write it?

You humanize AI content during writing by giving the AI your own material first, setting your voice with examples, and reviewing each section inside the same conversation before you publish. The seven steps below work in ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, or any similar tool. Each step adds something only you can supply.

Step 1: Start with your raw material, not a topic

Never open with “Write a blog post about X.” Open with what you know. Paste in the questions customers ask on calls, notes from a recent job, numbers from your analytics, a quote from a review, or a voice memo transcript. An AI model writes from whatever is in front of it, so if the only input is a topic, the output is the internet’s average take on that topic.

Here are 12 questions my customers asked about [topic] this month, plus my notes from two recent jobs. Don’t write anything yet. Summarize the 3 themes you see and tell me what’s missing.

Step 2: Set your voice with real examples

Tell the AI who it is writing for and how you sound, then show it. Paste two or three paragraphs you wrote yourself, such as an email to a customer or a page you’re proud of. Add a short list of words and phrases you never use. Tools like ChatGPT custom instructions and Claude Projects let you save this once and reuse it for every piece.

You’re writing for small business owners, not marketers. Match the tone of these samples: short sentences, plain words, a little dry humor. Never use: “unlock,” “leverage,” “in today’s fast-paced world,” “game-changer.”

Step 3: Let the AI interview you

Ask the AI to question you before it drafts. A good interview pulls out the details that make content yours: the mistake you see most often, the price range you actually quote, what you’d tell a friend. Answer in rough, spoken-style notes. The AI handles the polishing later.

Ask me 8 questions, one at a time, that would help you write an article only someone with my experience could write. Push for specifics: numbers, examples, mistakes, and opinions.

Step 4: Approve an outline that includes your opinion

Have the AI propose an outline and stop. Check that each section answers a real question a reader would type, and that at least one section takes a clear position. A useful article disagrees with something. If the outline could have come from any competitor, send it back.

Step 5: Draft one section at a time

Ask for one section at a time, and tell the AI which of your notes, numbers, or stories belong in it. Writing section by section keeps your details from getting averaged away, and it makes errors easier to catch. Ask the AI to mark any sentence where it had to guess, using [CHECK], so you know exactly what to verify.

Step 6: Run a critique pass inside the AI

Before you edit by hand, have the AI critique its own draft against a checklist. In our experience, AI models spot generic writing more reliably when you ask them to look for specific problems than when you ask them to “make it sound more human.”

Review this draft. List every sentence that (1) could appear on any competitor’s site, (2) makes a claim without a number or source, (3) uses filler phrases, or (4) doesn’t reflect the experience in my notes. Suggest a specific fix for each.

Step 7: Do a final human read and fact check

Read the whole piece out loud once. Check every number against its source, and confirm every claim you’d be comfortable defending to a customer. Your name or your business is on the page, so you are responsible for what it says. Our guide to SEO copywriting for people and search engines covers titles, headings, and structure for this final pass.

How is humanizing during writing different from humanizing after?

Humanizing during writing changes what the content says, while humanizing after writing only changes how it sounds. The table below compares the two approaches.

Humanize after (rewrite or humanizer tool)

Humanize during (inside the AI conversation)

What changes

Word choice and sentence rhythm

Facts, examples, structure, and point of view

Where your experience enters

Rarely, if at all

Before the first draft

Original data

None unless an editor adds it

Built in from your notes and numbers

Time spent editing

High: sentence-by-sentence rewriting

Lower: you review sections as they’re written

Chance of being cited by answer engines

Low: nothing unique to quote

Higher: specific claims and numbers to cite

Goal

Pass an AI detector

Help the reader

What content can AI write with only a light human touch?

AI can handle short, factual, structured content with light review, such as glossary definitions, product spec summaries, FAQ answers drawn from your own policies, and meta descriptions. These formats have a correct answer and little room for opinion, so experience adds less. The rule still applies: give the AI your real policies, specs, and prices rather than letting it guess.

Content that needs the full process includes service pages, buying guides, how-to articles, case studies, and anything that compares options or recommends a choice. These are the pages customers use to decide whether to trust you, and they are the pages most likely to be quoted in an AI answer. If you’re not sure which pages to rework first, start with a content audit.

How do you know if your humanized content is working?

You know humanized content is working when organic visits, engagement, and AI referrals to that page rise over the following few months. Check the page’s clicks and queries in Google Search Console, and compare its engagement rate with your site average in Google Analytics. Look for visits from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, and similar sources in your referral reports.

A free diib website scan shows your organic traffic, engagement, and AI visibility in one dashboard, so you can see whether rewritten pages are pulling ahead.
