This guide shows you how to run a check in about five minutes, how to read every part of your report, and what to do with your score once you have it.
What does the AI Visibility check look at?
The AI Visibility check looks at whether AI answers send customers to your business or to someone else. More people now get their answer before they click a link. If those answers recommend your competitors and not you, you lose the customer without ever knowing it.
The check covers three places:
- Google AI Overviews. The AI-written answer Google shows above the regular search results. diib checks which sites it cites.
- ChatGPT and Gemini. AI chat apps people ask for recommendations. diib checks whether their answers name your business.
- Your business name. When someone searches your name, diib checks whether Google’s AI points them to you or somewhere else.
Getting into these answers is called AEO (answer engine optimization), the AI-era cousin of SEO (search engine optimization). If you’re new to the idea, start with what AI visibility is and how to measure it.
How is the AI Visibility Score calculated?
The AI Visibility Score counts only the searches where Google showed an AI answer. diib runs each search on Google from your city, records whether an AI Overview appeared, and checks whether that AI Overview cited your site.
Here’s an example with 12 searches:
| What happened | Searches | Counts toward your score? |
|---|---|---|
| Google’s AI cited your site | 3 | Yes |
| Google’s AI cited someone else | 6 | Yes |
| No AI answer appeared | 3 | No |
| Your score | 3 cited you ÷ 9 with an AI answer = 33% | |
Each check includes:
- Google searches. Up to 12 per check (15 on Pro), written from the services you enter.
- AI chat questions. 8 questions asked to ChatGPT and Gemini the way a customer would ask them.
- Name searches. 2 searches for your business name, such as “[your business] reviews.” These are shown separately and are not part of your score.
A check takes a minute or two, and you can leave the page while it runs.
How do I run an AI Visibility check?
You run an AI Visibility check in three steps, and nothing runs until you’ve reviewed the search list.
1. Tell diib about your business
Check that your website is correct, then add your business name, city, state and the language your customers search in. Under Services you offer, add up to 10 services. Press Enter after each one.
2. Review the searches
diib writes your Google searches and AI chat questions from the services you entered. Switch between them with the Google AI Overviews and AI chats tabs. Edit, remove or add anything that doesn’t sound like your customers.
3. Run the check
Click Run the check. Your report will be waiting when it’s done, even if you leave the page.
Tips for better results
- Use the words your customers use. “Golf instructor certification” beats “golf.”
- Be specific. A broad service like “Business Services” produces broad searches you were never going to win.
- Pick the city where your customers are. diib searches Google from that location, and AI answers differ by place.
- Run it again after you update your site. AI answers change day to day, so each report is a snapshot.
How do I read my AI Visibility report?
Start with your score, then find the searches you lost. The searches where AI picked someone else, and the sites it picked, are where your opportunity is.
| Report section | What it shows | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| AI Overview score | The share of AI answers that cited your site, such as “Cited in 3 of 9.” | Higher is better. 0% is a common starting point and means AI isn’t using your site as a source yet. |
| Your searches | One tile per search. Green means AI cited you, “Picked someone else” means another site won, and dashed means no AI answer appeared. | Filter by Cited to see what’s working and by Someone else to see what to go after. “You · #1” means you were the first source cited. |
| Sites Google’s AI cites most | The sites cited most often across all the AI answers, with a count for each. | These are the sources AI trusts on your topics. Big platforms like YouTube and Reddit often show up. The business sites near them are your real competition. |
| What ChatGPT and Gemini say | A real customer question, the full AI answer, and how many of 8 answers named you. | “Names you · #3” means you were the third business mentioned. Read the answer to see how AI describes you and who it recommends. |
| What to change (Pro) | Specific fixes for your site, with quotes from the pages AI cited and from yours. | Use it as a to-do list. Copy a brief for your web designer turns it into a note you can send. |
| Searches for your business name | Whether Google’s AI mentions you when people search your name. | If it doesn’t, people looking you up may see other businesses first. This section is not part of your score. |
What should I do after I get my score?
What you do next depends on where your score lands and what the AI chats said about you.
If your score is low
Look at the sites that won your searches and what their pages say that yours don’t. Add clear, plain answers to the questions your customers ask. Our guide to optimizing content for Google AI Overviews shows a page layout you can copy.
If your score is good
Note which searches you win and keep those pages strong. Then go after the searches you lost, one page at a time.
If ChatGPT and Gemini don’t name you
Make sure your site clearly says who you are, what you offer and where. Reviews and mentions on other sites help too. See 5 things to do this week to get mentioned in AI answers.
If Google’s AI skips you on your own business name
Check that your homepage and Google Business Profile show your exact business name, location and contact details. Our five-minute AI-readability audit covers the basics.
