Writers Tax Limited

Writers Tax is a firm of chartered accountants established to provide tax and accountancy services to authors, scriptwriters and other professional writers.

The firm was established in 2020 by Louise and Jonathan Ford who have over 50 years of experience between them in dealing with authors and creative businesses. They aim to provide a knowledgeable, patient, friendly and caring service. There are no other staff at Writers Tax so clients always receive personal attention from Louise or Jonathan.

Writers Tax believe that being a specialist author accountant is important. There are some particular issues that authors face that are not always properly appreciated by other accountants. Here are a few examples:

Authors who are sole traders may be allowed to use ‘Creative Averaging’ to smooth out their profits and reduce their tax bills. This is a valuable tax relief for a writer.

Authors who wish to trade through their own limited companies need to pay a great deal of care in how they deal with the copyright of existing books. Gifting the copyright to a company could be a very bad mistake resulting in paying more tax than necessary. Writers Tax provide expert advice to authors setting up a limited company.

Authors are much more likely to have to deal with international aspects of taxation such as withholding taxes and VAT place of supply rules.

Becoming a client of Writers Tax is straight forward. You will have an initial conversation with either Louise or Jonathan to explore what would be the best level of service for you. Then you’ll receive a written proposal outlining exactly what your monthly fee is. If you already have an accountant then Writers Tax will get in touch directly with them for the handover information.

Most Writers Tax clients use Xero to keep on top of their records. Writer Tax set this up for you and give you full training and ongoing support so your records are accurate and up to date. If bookkeeping isn’t one of your skills then this can be done for you as an additional service. Clients on the bookkeeping package just need to take a picture of receipts on their smartphone and Writer Tax does the rest.

Writers Tax look after clients all over the UK. You can book video or phone calls whenever you need to discuss your tax position. There is also a secure portal to share documents that need your attention or approval.

Writers Tax are currently rated 5* on Facebook and Google and here are some of the reviews that have been received.

“Although reputedly good with words I have an innate fear of anything involving numbers and so selecting the right Accountant was vital. Queries are always answered fully, promptly and at a level my non- mathematical brain can comprehend. I give Louise my highest personal recommendation”
