About Us: The Swains – Where Heritage Meets Hospitality

We’re the Swains—a husband and wife team with roots in two of America’s most vibrant cities. I was born and raised in Chicago, a place that taught me resilience, ingenuity, and the value of hard work. My wife, a proud daughter of New Orleans, brings with her a passion for culture, heritage, and Southern hospitality. Together, we’ve blended our individual histories and shared love for travel, design, and community into a business that reflects who we are and how we view the world.

Our journey into the world of short-term rentals began organically over eight years ago. It all started in New Buffalo, Michigan, a charming resort town nestled along the coast of Lake Michigan. What began as a weekend getaway property evolved into something more meaningful—a sanctuary that welcomed guests from all walks of life. With each stay, we found ourselves increasingly passionate about creating spaces that weren’t just stylish and functional, but genuinely welcoming. That passion became the foundation for what we do today.

Why Detroit? A City on the Rise

As we expanded our footprint, Detroit called to us in a powerful way. The city’s story is one of grit, creativity, and rebirth. Its rich French and African American heritage, musical legacy, and architectural splendor reminded us so much of what we loved about New Orleans—and yet, it’s entirely its own. We felt compelled to contribute to the city’s renaissance, to honor its past, and to help shape its future by offering visitors authentic, comfortable stays in its most dynamic neighborhoods.

Detroit is more than just a location for us—it’s a muse. Our properties are designed to reflect the city’s industrial elegance and artistic vibrancy, with exposed brick walls, reclaimed wood beams, vintage fixtures, and thoughtfully curated décor. We’re not interested in cookie-cutter accommodations; we want guests to feel immersed in the spirit of Detroit the moment they walk through the door.

What Sets Us Apart
