A Journey of Hearing and a Better Life
\nMy mother has had hearing problems for the past 20 years or so. She is 80 years old right now. About 15 years ago, I noticed that she started asking me to repeat everything I was saying. It was very frustrating for both my mother and me. When I visited her, she always had her TV volume turned way up, I mean WAY UP. The neighbors could hear her TV. It was time to find a better way.<\/p>\n
Off To The Audiologist We Go
\nMy siblings and I recommended that she see an audiologist, which she did. About $6,000 later (her insurance did not cover this cost), she had a set of new hearing aids, and she could hear MUCH better. No more repeating myself and no more loud TVs (or at least not as loud as it was). Life was much better!<\/p>\n
Losing Hearing Aids (Again and Again)
\nAfter about six months or so, she lost one of her hearing aids. The hearing aid had a 3-year warranty that would cover 25% of the original purchase price and only covers one replacement. So, that cost us another $1,500 to replace the lost hearing aid. We were $7,500 into this journey.<\/p>\n
Another year later, she lost another one. The warranty would not cover another replacement, so we had to spend another $6,000. I’m sure you are doing the math. If not, we have invested about $13,500 in hearing aids.<\/p>\n
As you may have guessed, this has happened another two times in the past five years or so. I don’t want to do the math because it’s depressing and ridiculous how much we have spent on hearing aids.<\/p>\n
Every time we had to purchase another set of hearing aids, I was furious. I kept thinking that there had to be a better way.<\/p>\n
FDA Steps In with OTC Hearing Aids
\nOn August 16, 2022, the FDA issued a final rule to improve access to hearing aids and creates a new category of “over-the-counter” (OTC) hearing aids, enabling consumers with perceived mild to moderate hearing impairment to purchase hearing aids directly from stores or online retailers without the need for a medical exam, prescription or a fitting adjustment by an audiologist.<\/p>\n
OTC Hearing Aids Are Everywhere
\nWithin a month or two, I noticed new hearing aid brands everywhere. These new brands were selling OTC hearing aids directly from their website and even from retailers such as Amazon. These new OTC hearing aids were a fraction of the cost, anywhere from $100 – $2,000. That is a huge price range for basically the same products. This was causing quite a bit of confusion in the marketplace. And the level of quality was not as good as traditional hearing aid brands.<\/p>\n
