I started playing golf back in 1993 and was somewhat taken by the game and its challenges.
\nBut no more than I decided to attend a Club building course at Golfsmith U.K. in spring, 1994 to get the hands-on experience and insight in what it actually requires to build golf clubs.
\nI bought some components, tools and instruments and started getting some experience.
\nIn 1995 I was lucky to be elected to run a pro shop at a pay-n-play golf course. Many visitors, but not so many customers.
\nOver the years I have been attending factory training at Wilson Sporting Goods, Irvine, Scotland and at TaylorMade, U.K. when being the suppliers\u2019 guarantee repair shop for Danish customers and also had a week’s course at HQ, Golfsmith, Austin TX.
\nIn 2000 I stopped running the shop and focused on servicing the club members, but kept the clubmaking business on the side.
\nIn 2009 I stopped the day-to-day work at the golf club, but kept Clubfitting as a pastime hobby.
\nI work out of the following basic principles:
\n\u2022\tAny golfer has his own unique swing
\n\u2022\tAny golfer has his defined purpose with golf
\n\u2022\tAny golfer should play with the lightest shaft he can control
\n\u2022\tAny golfer should play with the lightest clubs he can control
\n\u2022\tWhy buy new equipment when the old can be modified
\n\u2022\tWhy practice with golf equipment that does not fit you
\n\u2022\tClubfitting is for everyone
\n\u2022\tThe golf equipment must be fitted to suit the golfer\u2019s swing, not the swing fitted to the golf equipment
\nThe first step in the fitting process I use is:
\nMeasuring the golfer\u2019s equipment and compare it with the manufacturer\u2019s specifications.
\n\u2022\tMore often than not I find differences in swing weight, length, loft and lie
\nI measure the golfer\u2019s
\n\u2022\twrist-to-ground measure to determine theoretical club length
\n\u2022\tvisually the grip
\nWhen the adjustments have been made in consultation with the golfer, he is then sent off to get the (new) feel of his equipment. This is to be done in familiar surroundings and at his leasure.
\nThe next step is to find ways to improve \u201cfeel\u201d. This is achieved with leadtape. I can measure MOI (which I prefer over swingweight) and adjust the irons accordingly.
\nThis time the golfer should have completed the fitting.
\nBUILDING GOLF EQUIPMENT
\nBasically the same method is used when I build a set.
\n1.\tSwing speed test with driver\/3wood and 6 og 7 iron
\n2.\tWrist-to-ground measure for theoretical length
\n3.\tVisual check of grip size
\n4.\tTest with demo clubhead and shafts to find the optimal combination
\nWhen the components are ordered and subsequently delivered each part is measured and weighed with everything recorded.
\nShaft weight, tip trim, spine, FLO, CPM, balance point, head weight.
\nA test iron is built for the golfer to try out and report any additional wishes\/adjustments he wishes to be incorporated in the final build.
\nAll factual data will be recorded (static weight, swing weight, actual club length, MOI, loft, lie). Then the golf set is delivered to the golfer so that he can test in familiar surroundings at his golf club.
\nWhen the testing is completed we meet and any adjustments to lie will be made. Should there also be gapping issues these will be addressed at the same time.
\nTo me, helping golfers with the challenges with their equipment is more rewarding than actually playing the game. That said, I truly enjoy a round with my son and the odd customer from time to time.
\nIt keeps me busy \u2013 and thereby sane \u2013 in this crazy world.
