Exploding Phone has one of the longest track records of app development and the experience and skills to deliver world-class smart-device solutions. The team of seasoned software engineers and UX/UI designers has been developing apps since the creation of the Apple App Store in 2008. The company has since delivered over 300 apps and smart device solutions to over 150 clients by the start of 2021. Its range of competencies has grown with the evolution of smartphones and the associated smart device market including smart speakers and wearables such as smart watches.

The company has purposely remained relatively small to ensure it continues to offer its customers a highly personal, client-centred business partnership. This is corroborated by the fact that many clients choose to enter into multi-year, on-going relationships where the scope and utility of the end-product evolves with the customer’s and their end users’ requirements.

The team is as comfortable working with large enterprises as it is with start-ups. Customers include Taylor Wimpey, the National Health Service and the Ford Motor Company, along with a number of highly successful app based start-up businesses. Key markets served include education, health, construction and retail, in both ‘Business to Business’ and ‘Business to Consumer’ contexts. Whatever the client the underlying company culture is focussed upon ensuring customers receive the best possible experience along with a fantastic technical solution.

The company believes that bespoke Native app development is generally a better solution for customers that wish to provide the best possible end-user experience. As such the company may not always offer the cheapest proposal, however the benefits of choosing in a Native code approach are manifest in the delivery of elegant, robust and effective solutions. This investment also generally results in the process providing the best possible value for money. Engineering excellence is supported by having a UK-based team where individuals maintain a close relationship with projects from start to finish. The company’s management strongly believe that satisfied customers are the best sales and marketing resources and the team prides itself on going the extra mile to achieve this.

Typical initial projects tend to have a budget of between £10,000 and £40,000 and a time to delivery of three to six months. Once contractual arrangements and a deposit are in place Exploding Phone’s designer and project manager will schedule a meeting to build out upon the contractual requirements. This process can be highly iterative and typically involves creating visuals and User Experience wireframes along with definition of Content and App Management Control Portal. Once the design process is signed-off the project progresses to the development team, usually comprising or an iOS and Android developer, one of whom will also build the Content Management System. The client subsequently receives preliminary builds for User Acceptance Testing. Once any issues are resolved the system is then made live, typically involving submission to App Stores, etc. The product then moves into a 90 day warranty period. Thereafter the company offers a comprehensive Maintenance and Support service that ensures that client’s apps remain both compatible with operating system upgrades and that the User Interface remains fresh as best-practice and tastes evolve.
