\nAfter years of buying expensive designer labels, I decided to start purchasing products that were non-label, and yet had an equal if not better aesthetic and design edge. I sourced these items from around the world, for some years. At work, our out, people would continually come up to me and say ‘Where did you get that gorgeous dress or shoes or bag?’ I had not only gained some nice compliments, but I had also bet the brand machine, that was the huge luxury goods market, with incredible mark ups on its products. I could not justify the prices on these clothes that I saw on expensive brand sites. A lot were made in the same countries I was buying from, with their own labels sewn into them. I didn’t see that as sustainable fashion.<\/p>\n

It was the brand machine that I wanted to deliberately snub. I was on a good salary, and had an eye for fashion, beauty and well being. I became my own selector, acquirer and stylist. I decided I wanted to share this with others. My partner started getting me to buy his clothing the way I did. And soon our wardrobe was stocked with fewer, but much better pieces that would last for more than one season. And didn’t cost 4 x the amount.<\/p>\n

This to me is sustainable, smart shopping. I research + curate products that tend to last longer. With an eye on design + detail and common sense, I know what will last and what will not – ignoring the brand machine screaming on the sideline.<\/p>\n
