UK Musha was started by the founder, Mike. He had suffered from depression for many years. Almost by design, he came across the subject of mycology and started trying to grow mushrooms at home. Over the years, this hobby helped Mike to overcome depression and so he wanted to share the hobby with others. He has a background in labs, chemistry and biology so started putting these skills to use for advancing the hobby of mycology and mushroom growing.

At this time the hobby of mushroom growing was in it’s infancy. There were not a large range of mushroom grow kits or species available to the home hobbyist. There were mainly oyster mushrooms, even shops had a distinct lack of choice. You could choose between button mushrooms… and large button mushrooms; Agaricus bisporus.
Because of a lack of accessible, easy to use and multifunctional mushroom grow kits, Mike had a hard time starting in the mycology hobby. Many hobbyists wanted to explore the hobby of mycology but did not have access to high quality, modern mushroom grow kits which they could try to grow different species of mushrooms. After speaking to others who were interested in growing mushrooms at home and trying different mushroom grow kits that were on the market, Mike realised there was a need for different kinds of mushroom grow kits that hobbyists could try growing many kinds of different mushrooms. There was not much in the way of good quality mushroom grow kits. There was also a lack of confidence around the strains or phenotype of mushrooms available as spores for the hobbyist to purchase.
One grow kit purchased arrived completely green with mould. Another grow kit was simply straw in a black bag with a small bag of mushroom spawn. The quality and variety was not there, so started the quest to develop decent mushroom grow kits. The first was a small grow kit that could easily grow many varieties of easy to grow mushrooms. There was difficulty in making larger kits as the substrate did not lend well to large mushroom grow kits.
A unique substrate was developed to be able to grow many kinds of Coprophilous fungi. This substrate would work well for larger grow kits. The key was not to use manure but to mimic it as manure could cause health issues if used to cultivate mushrooms without proper care at home. Eventually the substrate was developed with success and has been the basis for a unique mushroom grow kit.
Ultimately a third type of mushroom substrate was developed as a bridge between the first two mushroom grow kits, more aimed at beginner mushroom growers. We now have two unique substrates that we use in our grow kits that are unique, no other mushroom hobbyist vendors offer anything like our products. Soon other mushroom hobbyist products were added as well as mushroom spores and sterile grain bags.
We now have a wide variety of spores of different mushroom phenotypes as well as wild collected exotic mushroom spores. We provide these as mushroom spore prints and mushroom spore syringes. We have put a lot of effort into sourcing quality, with provenance as it can be difficult to categorise mushrooms just from their spores. This is where we are even able to provide mushroom spores that have been hand collected by taxonomists and mycologists in different parts of the world. These guys have the experience and qualifications to deliver the best mushroom spores so our customers know exactly what species or phenotype of mushroom spores they are buying.
Now our mushroom grow kits and mushroom spores are only available to buy in the UK at UK Musha. We used to export into the EU and the rest of the world, however, since brexit this has put a stop to this due to the expense and admin associated with exporting from the UK since brexit. For now, our mushroom magic is only available in the UK, to buy our mushroom grow kits and mushroom spore syringes in the UK only. We now have a wide range of offerings but don’t plan to expand our product range much more for now. We are trying to keep our focus on the important products.
