The Simply Amish story began in the 1970s, when bellbottoms and short shorts could be spotted just about everywhere — except in good Amish homes. Across the nation, a new age of convenience had arrived. Microwave ovens were becoming common-place, and fashion-forward housewives were ordering the latest kitchen appliances in a wide range of deceptively tasteful sounding colors, like Avocado Green and Harvest Gold. But in a time of rapid change and progress, no one in the city could buy a beautiful piece of Amish furniture without a long trip to the country. Until a couple of guys from the country came up with a novel idea.

The Beginning

It all started in 1979, when Kevin Kauffman and his brothers joined their dad to learn the finer points of furniture construction on their family farm. Putting his experience to good use, Kevin soon joined forces with his uncle, John Mast, to start a company that would pursue a much larger vision. Together, the two partners eventually linked an entire network of traditional Amish workshops with a modern distribution system, and furniture lovers everywhere rejoiced.

In fact, our hardwood suppliers work hard to ensure that forestry is practiced in an environmentally responsible, socially beneficial and economically viable manner. In addition, all of our hardwood sources are located within 500 miles of our craftsmen, saving fuel and shipping cost, and leaving a smaller carbon footprint than companies that import resources.

Seventy percent of our furniture is made by Simply Amish craftsmen living within 20 miles of our distribution center. Most of the rest live within 200 miles, and we coordinate our long-distance pick ups with deliveries made to our dealers located throughout the USA and Canada, providing additional fuel savings.

Whether they’re traveling by horse and buggy, canning the food they grow in their own gardens, or drying their laundry on the line, it would be hard to find any culture in America that’s more environmentally friendly than the Amish.

Keeping waste under wraps.

At Simply Amish, we proudly blanket-wrap our furniture during shipping. We find it protects our furniture exceptionally well. And it also dramatically reduces the amount of foam, cardboard and plastics that are normally sent to landfills.

We make sure no lumber is wasted.

In Amish communities, neighbors share smaller wood pieces that they can’t use, while sawdust is either sold or given to farmers to use for livestock bedding. Scraps are also used to heat shops and homes during the winter.

Our international distribution center is heated and cooled using an energy-efficient geothermal system, while the two acre pond that serves as our geothermal field provides a water source for wildlife and local fire fighters, should they need to fight a fire in our rural area.

In addition to our geothermal system, the walls of our distribution center use a special material with an R-value far higher than most homes. This helps us provide a comfortable working environment for our employees year-round, while dramatically reducing our heating and cooling needs.

At Simply Amish all our furniture is made to order, therefore giving us tremendous flexibility in our manufacturing process to make our furniture, your furniture.Quality First and Foremost.

You’ll see it in the finish that’s sanded and stained by hand. And solid drawers with dovetail joints in both the front and back, designed to keep their shape for generations.

At Simply Amish, quality is first and foremost, along with an attention to detail that goes far beneath the surface. All of our tables are sealed on the bottom to prevent warping, and our hand-finished drawers run deep, mounted with smooth-running hardware that’s guaranteed for life. In fact, we’re so confident in the quality of our construction, it’s backed by a lifetime guarantee that few others can match.

Lifetime Guarantee.

Our promise is simple. If your furniture fails during normal household use in the lifetime of the original owner due to problems in either the workmanship or material, we’ll repair or replace it for free, with the following exceptions:

Cabinet lights, as well as all finishes, fabrics and leather* are warrantied for one year; the moving parts in our wall beds, desk chairs and recliners are warrantied for three years; and, while we fully appreciate the beauty of unfinished furniture, we are unable to extend our warranty to any furniture that’s not protected by our exceptional finish.

*Does not apply to damage caused by others or any defects resulting from abuse, alterations or accidents.

This warranty applies only to normal household use determined solely at the discretion of the manufacturer. Liability for consequential property damage is excluded from this warranty.

Once a Warranty issue is confirmed by Simply Amish, it is the responsibility of the original owner to return the piece to their nearest Simply Amish dealer. Simply Amish is not responsible for any transportation costs incurred by the original owner to return the piece to the nearest Simply Amish dealer or redelivery from Simply Amish dealer to the original owner. There is no charge for the cost of Simply Amish picking up the piece from Simply Amish Dealer, repairing warranty issue, and returning to Simply Amish dealer. Simply Amish is sold through independently owned dealers, and Simply Amish has no control over their policy for picking up warranty related items at residences or businesses. This Lifetime Guarantee for workmanship or material cannot be transferred beyond the original owner.

The finish on our furniture is catalyzed varnish and is resistant to water, alcohol, warm dishes, and nail polish remover. You should allow the finish 30 days to cure to reach its full potential of its protective qualities. Solid wood will breathe, expand, and contract with normal temperature and humidity changes. Movement of this nature is normal and will not affect the structural strength or beauty of the furniture. With tables you may even notice a gap in the center of the table or at the ends where the two halves of the top and leaves meet as humidity conditions change. For your comfort, and to protect your solid wood furniture, use a humidifier and/or air conditioner to keep your home’s relative humidity around 35%. Avoid placing your furniture directly in front of a heat source such as register, etc. Do not place your furniture in direct sunlight for long periods of time.

If a Simply Amish product has issues not covered under our Lifetime Guarantee, our Returns department will assess the issue, provide a written estimate for the repair, and if work is approved by Simply Amish dealer, pick-up and redeliver the piece needing repair, to the Simply Amish dealer. Under no circumstances will Simply Amish pickup and redeliver to furniture owner. All transportation costs associated with picking up the product from owner’s residence and returning to Simply Amish dealer, and redelivery from Simply Amish dealer to owner’s residence is the purview of the owner and dealer.

Items for non-residential use are covered under a separate three-year limited warranty and cover items if they fail due to workmanship or materials. To qualify for this warranty, we need to know that the items ordered are for non-residential use. Some items ordered for non-residential use will not qualify for either non-residential use or residential use warranties.Why don’t you display pricing?

Is the furniture really made by the Amish?

Most of our product is still made by practicing Amish, though some have moved on to other religions like Mennonite. Still others are not related but trained by us in the way of Amish craftsmanship. Each builder is carefully selected to meet specific guidelines and quality standards, and our builders gladly stand behind their work and sign each piece of furniture upon completion.

Where is the furniture built?

All furniture from Simply Amish is constructed in the U.S.A. with the majority of it coming from the Central Illinois region.

How are the drawers constructed?

Every drawer box is made using a solid wood five piece construction, with dovetails in front and in the back to ensure that the box will retain its integrity for years to come.

The drawer boxes are also finished both inside and out, so they not only look good, but will prevent any delicate fabrics from snagging.

What is the standard drawer slide?

Exceptional drawers require exceptional hardware.

That’s why our drawers feature heavy-duty slides that are fully enclosed and mounted from below, combining years of quiet, reliable operation with an unobstructed view of their solid dovetail construction.

SmartSlides, which are standard on all our drawers, fully extend for maximum access and feature an advanced mechanism that prevents slamming by self-closing each drawer inches from the cabinet.

What type of table slides are available?

Ball-Bearing Slides
Standard on all tables, unless otherwise noted. Our sturdy built ball-bearing slides, custom made for us in Germany, provide years of smooth reliable operation. These top of the line slides come with our lifetime warranty, affording you, the original owner, protection against defects of materials or craftsmanship.

Wooden Slides
Our larger ball-bearing slides open to around 50”, any table that opens wider (our really long extension tables) will feature custom made wooden slides.

Locks
Tables equipped with the ball-bearing slides will also feature leaf locks to allow you to lock the top in place with or without leaves in place.

What is the difference between woods?

Each wood has their own unique characteristics which can impact the finishes that can be applied, and also impact the cost of the raw materials and manufacturing time. Each wood also has unique visual characteristics that can meet specific style requirements. For instance cherry and soft maple have an even grain which can lend itself well to clean/contemporary styles. Below is a brief description of all the woods we offer.

Red Oak is a very popular hardwood, chosen for its traditional, coarse-textured look, as well as its excellent durability and strength. It accepts stain consistently and wears very well over time, making red oak a good choice for furniture that will see heavy everyday use. Natural color varies from yellow to pale brown, often with a light reddish tinge.

Quartersawn White Oak — much like red oak — is hard and strong, providing outstanding wear-resistance. It has a medium-coarse to coarse texture and varies in color from light tan to nearly white or light grey. Our Amish craftsmen use quartersawn white oak for a unique aesthetic appeal.

Soft Maple is a straight-grained, fine-textured wood. And despite its confusing name, it’s actually a hardwood. Derived from red or silver maple trees, soft maple is not as durable as its hard maple cousin, but is more capable of accepting stain. Soft maple has roughly the same density as cherry, with colors usually ranging from light cream to pale brown with occasional dark streaks.

Hard Maple, or rock maple, comes from sugar or black maple trees. It’s a tough, moderately heavy wood with a fine and uniform texture. Hard maple finishes very smoothly and is extremely durable. Commonly seen with no stain, its natural color varies from nearly white to light tan, with an occasional reddish tinge.

Cherry is a dense, even-grained wood, widely considered to be the finest of the fruitwoods. It is prized for its beauty and considered an excellent choice for both formal and casual applications. Natural coloration varies from a light cream to a dark reddish brown; however, cherry can darken considerably with age, developing a deep, rich patina over the course of several years.

Character Cherry has all the characteristics of the classic cherry as described above, plus a few more. Harvested from the same tree as its premium counterpart, character chery is simply a different grade — one with more knots, variations in the grain, and more, well, character.

Hickory is a close-grained wood that’s often nearly white in color. It’s also one of the hardest, heaviest and strongest woods found in the United States. Because of its flexibility and resilience, hickory is commonly used in the construction of chairs and other bentwood furniture.

Walnut is a dense wood, ranging in color from light- to deep-chocolate brown. The black walnut tree produces one of the finest cabinet woods. Slow-growing and highly desired, walnut is more expensive than many other woods.

Is it really solid wood?

There are varying degrees of quality when it comes to furniture production. Some use particleboard in places where they think you won’t look — and cardboard in places where they just don’t care. But that’s not the Amish way. At Simply Amish, we use only the finest northern hardwoods, raised to perfection, and slowly kiln-dried to prevent splitting and provide years of reliable use.

Layered For Strength
There are some cases where solid wood panels aren’t practical, simply because the seasonal contraction and expansion would destroy the integrity of the joints. In these cases, we still use hardwood — just in a plywood form, layering multiple panels in a cross-grain build for maximum structural stability. This wood is most typically used in shelves, cabinet backs, and on cabinet sides without a flat or raised panel.

What does term Quartersawn mean?

Quartersawn is a technique for processing lumber that dates back hundreds of years, and it was widely used in furniture manufacturing in the 18th and 19th centuries. The reason it was widely used is it was a practical method for handling large trees prior to the advent of machinery.

The process was simple in that the large log was split into quarters using wedges — making it easier to manage. These pieces were then hauled off to the mill for processing. The result of this processing creates a very unique grain pattern that cannot be achieved using any other method, and is distinctive of certain time periods in United States history.
