Mohawk Valley Community College (MVCC) at a glance
Founded in 1946 to retrain World-War-II veterans, MVCC became New York State’s very first community college and now operates two campuses in Utica and Rome. Over nearly eight decades it has grown into the largest college between Syracuse and Albany, authorized to confer every major SUNY two-year award and more than 300 short-cycle workforce credentials.
An open-access engine of upward mobility
MVCC educates more than 19,000 credit and non-credit learners each year, with a credit student–to-faculty ratio of roughly 17 to 1—small enough for genuine faculty mentorship yet large enough to offer university-level resources.
The College is one of SUNY’s highest-access institutions: Pell-eligible students account for 60 percent of the credit population, and adults aged 25 or older make up about one in three learners.
That demographic mix shapes MVCC’s mission and explains its deep investment in holistic supports, from a campus food pantry to dedicated advisors for adult learners.
Program breadth with purposeful pathways
Students can choose from 80-plus credit programs—liberal arts transfer majors, high-demand career A.A.S. degrees, stackable certificates, and an expanding menu of micro-credentials—backed by more than 300 non-credit options for upskilling and industry certification.
Popular areas include Data Analytics, Game Art & Motion Media, Cybersecurity, and Health Sciences. Eleven programs are offered fully online, and nearly every on-ground class is livestreamed or recorded so learners can toggle between modalities.
Specialized labs you rarely see at a two-year college
Airframe & Powerplant Technology: 1,905 hours of FAA-approved aircraft-maintenance training delivered in just 12 months at Griffiss International Airport, with an optional second year that leads to an A.A.S. in Mechanical Technology – Aircraft Maintenance.
Semiconductor Manufacturing Technology: A brand-new A.A.S. aligned with the Wolfspeed silicon-carbide fab and New York’s upstate chips corridor.
Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (drones) and related geospatial credentials that leverage the Mohawk Valley’s FAA-designated UAS Test Site.
Workforce, business, and innovation partnerships
In February 2025 Governor Kathy Hochul designated MVCC one of only three planning-phase hubs for the $200 million ON-RAMP advanced-manufacturing network, confirming the College’s central role in regional talent strategy.
Complementing that effort is thINCubator, MVCC’s 8,500-sq-ft downtown innovation space that houses the Small Business Development Center, the Refinery accelerator, and low-cost co-working for student and community startups.
Affordability without compromise
Academic Advantage Pack—a concierge textbook-rental program—slashes course-material costs by up to 50 percent.

The Arthur O. Eve Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) adds supplemental grant aid, tutoring, and mentoring for academically promising students with significant financial need.
Through SUNY ReConnect, New York residents aged 25-55 can attend MVCC tuition-free, with evening scheduling, last-dollar scholarships, and credit for prior learning.
Schedules that fit real lives
The Evening Degree Program runs in eight-week blocks, letting working adults take two courses at a time and move through a cohort either on campus or online—an approach that keeps retention high for students balancing jobs and family.
Vibrant campus life—even at a community college
MVCC is unusual in offering residence halls for up to 450 students and in maintaining more than 35 clubs and organizations, plus intramural and varsity sports.
Athletics reached a new peak on March 24, 2025, when the Hawks men’s basketball team captured the program’s first NJCAA Division III national championship.
Cultural-events programming, leadership academies, and an award-winning Program Board round out the student experience.
Recognition for results
MVCC’s data-driven commitment to closing equity gaps earned it designation as an Achieving the Dream (ATD) 2025 Leader College, placing it among an elite cohort of institutions nationwide.
That honor, alongside ON-RAMP selection and multiple SUNY performance awards, signals a college that not only opens doors widely but also shepherds students to completion and career success.
Why MVCC stands out
MVCC’s differentiator is the way it weaves access, affordability, and advanced workforce relevance into a single student journey. Whether you’re earning an A.S. for transfer, securing an FAA license in 12 months, or reskilling tuition-free at age 40, the College meets you where you are and equips you for what the Mohawk Valley economy needs next—proving that a community college can be both a launch pad and a lifelong partner in learning.
