When I first began homeschooling my children, I quickly realized that one of the biggest challenges wasn’t the teaching itself — it was finding the right resources. Like many parents drawn to Charlotte Mason or Classical education, I wanted my children to encounter what Mason called living books — books that are alive with story, personality, and passion. These books are written by authors who cared deeply about their subject, who invite readers into a conversation rather than simply presenting facts. But tracking down those books was anything but simple. Many were out of print, available only in poorly scanned PDFs, or sold at prices that made building a complete library nearly impossible. Even when I did find them, the formatting was often frustrating: missing illustrations, inconsistent fonts, distracting errors, or pages that didn’t line up with study guides or curriculum schedules. That frustration became the seed of what would grow into Living Book Press. What Living Book Press Does At its heart, Living Book Press exists to take away the pain points of using this style of education. Parents who are trying to give their children a feast of ideas shouldn’t have to spend hours hunting for resources, wondering whether a digital file is accurate, or deciding if it’s worth paying collector’s prices for a brittle old copy. Instead, we provide affordable, carefully transcribed, and beautifully reformatted editions of classic living books in a variety of formats. Every book is designed to be practical for daily use while still honoring the spirit of the original. Whether it’s a printed softcover you can carry to the park, a sturdy hardcover for your family shelves, a PDF that matches the print edition for easy reference, or an audiobook to enjoy on the go, our goal is to make living books accessible to as many families as possible. The Care We Put Into Our Books Each Living Book Press title begins with a painstaking transcription. Text is checked line by line to ensure accuracy. We don’t simply scan and repackage — we restore. We reformat the layout for readability, select typefaces that are both attractive and easy on the eyes, and ensure consistency across series. In some cases, we go further. With series like Thornton Burgess’s much-loved Burgess Nature Books, we’ve added new illustrations to help modern readers visualize the world he describes. For nature study, we’ve released a refreshed edition of Anna Botsford Comstock’s monumental Handbook of Nature Study, making this foundational text easier to use in the homeschool setting. For those following Charlotte Mason’s own writings, we’ve made sure her original six-volume homeschooling series is available in print and digital formats with the same pagination as the first editions. That means families using study guides and schedules based on the originals won’t have to constantly cross-reference or guess. And for busy parents who want to absorb Mason’s ideas while folding laundry or driving, we also offer audio editions. These are small details, but for parents juggling multiple children, lesson planning, and the demands of daily life, they make a tremendous difference. Free Books and Global Reach Another hallmark of Living Book Press is generosity. Each month we offer two books completely free — because we believe every family, regardless of budget, should be able to begin building a library of living books. For those just starting out, these free titles provide an easy entry point into the world of literature-rich education. And while we’re based in Australia, Living Book Press has a worldwide reach. Our books are distributed globally, making it possible for families in North America, Europe, Asia, and beyond to access the same carefully prepared editions. Homeschooling is a global movement, and we are committed to supporting families wherever they are. Why Families Choose Us Families who choose Living Book Press often say the same things: “I can trust that the text is accurate.” “The formatting makes it a joy to read.” “I can actually afford to buy the full series.” “It’s available in the format that works for me.” That trust is something we work hard to earn. It shows in the details — the consistent fonts, the careful attention to illustrations, the sturdy bindings, and the clean digital editions that are easy to read on tablets or e-readers. It shows in the way we continue to expand our catalog with titles that homeschooling families request. And it shows in our willingness to make these treasures available to the widest possible audience. How It All Began Living Book Press didn’t start as a business plan. It started as a homeschooling dad — me — trying to create the resources my family needed. I was frustrated at the lack of affordable, accessible, high-quality editions of the very books that Charlotte Mason and Classical educators recommend. So I rolled up my sleeves, taught myself the skills I needed, and began transcribing, formatting, and designing books that my own children could use. Soon, other families saw what I was doing and wanted copies too. From there, Living Book Press grew — from one dad’s solution to a global resource for families who value living books. Our Philosophy The guiding philosophy of Living Book Press is simple: Accuracy. We preserve the author’s voice with meticulous transcription. Accessibility.
