Krav Maga Yashir

That teaches individuals how to predict, prevent and avoid violence, as well as how to physically deal with attacks and assaults, from single and multiple assailants who may be either armed (gun, knife, stick etc.) or unarmed. The system is a style of Israeli Krav Maga that is taught in the IDF (the Israeli Defense forces), that has been adapted for non-military usage by civilians, looking on how to avoid and deal with violence in urban, suburban, and rural settings etc. Krav Maga, within the military, is designed to get a new, untrained, recruit combat ready in the shortest possible time, and this is the approach taught at Krav Maga Yashir. Using instinctive and reflexive responses to attack, Israeli Krav Maga is about what you will do under the stress and duress of a real-life violent confrontation, rather than what you think you might want to do when attacked. The system also attempts to distill techniques and solutions down to a few basic common movements that can be reused over and over again to deal with a variety of different threats and attacks. This cuts down what a student needs to learn in order to defend themselves against all manner of assaults.

The Krav Maga Yashir program teaches that there are two types of violence: premeditated and spontaneous, and that both of these need to be handled differently. Premeditated acts are committed by predatory individuals who have planned, or are actively looking to exploit, an incident (e.g., muggings/street robberies etc.), whereas spontaneous violent events are those when as individual has become aggressive and potentially violent based on some perceived slight or injustice they have experienced (e.g., incidents of road-rage etc.). Many spontaneous incidents can be solved using de-escalation and conflict-resolution methods. Premediated acts of violence follow a common process, that runs along a timeline, with identifiable phases, and actions; this allows a trained individual who understands the process and the behaviors and actions that predatory offenders take, to predict, identify and avoid violent events before they occur. This part of the program represents the self-protection piece of the Krav Maga Yashir syllabus. Our self-defense aspect involves how to physically deal with an assailant(s) in a legally defensible way/manner, both from a criminal and civil perspective – This is one of the reasons we place such an emphasis on avoidance.

Although the majority of the Krav Maga program, is taught and trained in a dedicated training center, certain aspects of training take place in a variety of different environments both to give a sense of what it may be like to experience violence in the settings which it occurs e.g., on the street, in cars, and in clubs and bars etc., as well as training in locations which offer a variety of physical challenges, such as on sand and in water i.e., the beach. As well as training in different environments, the program also teaches students how to train from different positions of disadvantage, such as on the ground, when seated and when in restricted spaces etc. This teaches students to be adaptable, when in different environments and how they may have to alter and change, techniques and solutions somewhat in order to survive the situation. In real-life violent incidents, the situation determines the solutions, and a large part of our training is to help develop this problem solving skillset.

The Head of the Krav Maga Yashir system is Gershon Ben Keren, a 5th Degree Black Belt (trained, tested, and certified in Israel), a 2010 inductee into the Museum of Israeli Martial Arts in Herzliya, Israel. He has also taught Krav Maga in Israel. Gershon, has two masters’ degree (Psychology – Newcastle University, & Criminology and Criminal Psychology – University of Essex), and is an active member of both the APA (American Psychological Association) and the ASC (American Society of Criminology). As part of his approach to teaching reality-based self-defense, he researches and studies the methods and approaches that violent offenders use when targeting and selecting individuals to victimize. He is the author of three Amazon Best-Selling books on Krav Maga: Krav Maga – Real World Solutions to Violence (Tuttle Press, 2014), Krav Maga – Tactical Survival (Tuttle Press, 2017) and, Krav Maga – Extreme Survival (Tuttle Press, 2018). He is the author of “The Krav Maga Blog”, a weekly blog, that has article about dealing with violence from both an academic/research-based and security perspective. Gershon has been working in the security industry since 1990, first in the UK, and then in Europe and the U.S., and now offers consultancy services and self-protection to corporate clients, as well as training to law-enforcement and military agencies.

The main Krav Maga training center is located just outside Boston, in Massachusetts, and is open to civilians, law-enforcement and military personnel. The training center houses both a fitness gym, and matted training area (1.5” Zebra mats – the same that are used for national and international Judo tournaments). There is also a dedicated classroom space for teaching security concepts and principles.
