What Sets Us Apart: I Am Barista Coffee School At I Am Barista Coffee School, we believe coffee is more than just a beverage—it's a craft, a culture, and a calling. Based in the heart of Melbourne, one of the world’s coffee capitals, we have built a training experience that goes far beyond technical skills. We empower aspiring baristas not only with the expertise to excel behind the machine but also with the confidence, mindset, and hands-on experience needed to thrive in today’s specialty coffee industry. What sets us apart is our student-first, real-world-ready philosophy. We’re not just ticking boxes with generic training modules—we create immersive, intimate, and industry-informed classes that mirror the dynamic energy of a real café. All our courses are designed to give students genuine job readiness, not just certifications. Our founder, Carlos Gastón Mena, created I Am Barista out of a passion for hospitality, education, and creative expression. With over a decade of experience as a barista, café owner, and hospitality trainer, Carlos saw a gap in the market: too many students were completing barista courses that were outdated, rushed, or disconnected from the actual expectations of café work. He wanted to create something different—something transformative. Carlos’s journey is an inspiring one. Starting from humble beginnings and learning the ropes the hard way, he moved from behind the espresso machine to mentoring hundreds of students and opening his own café and coffee education business. His teaching style is warm, hands-on, and focused on building both technical skills and inner confidence. His belief? That anyone can become a great barista—with the right training, mindset, and support. One of the most unique aspects of I Am Barista Coffee School is our "I'm Ready to Work" Program—a comprehensive job-preparation course that includes both barista skills and latte art training, followed by an online theory test and guided practice sessions. Unlike many other training centres, we prepare our students for actual employment—we simulate busy café scenarios, provide constructive feedback, and even help with job search tips and resume advice. For those who want to go deeper, we offer additional trial shifts and real café experience opportunities (depending on the season and café partners). We keep our class sizes small—never more than 4 students per session—to ensure every learner receives personalised feedback and time on the machine. Our facilities are equipped with professional, industry-standard equipment (including multiple commercial espresso machines, grinders, and milk stations), so students can learn exactly as they would on the job. All our trainers are qualified professionals with years of café experience under their aprons. We also celebrate diversity and accessibility. Many of our students are newcomers to Australia, looking to break into the café scene with little to no prior experience. We’ve worked with individuals from all over the world, helping them gain confidence in both their coffee and communication skills. Several of our graduates are now working in some of Melbourne’s best-known cafés—and many stay in touch, returning for advanced training or just to share their stories. Beyond the basics, our Latte Art Courses are among the most popular in the city. We teach everything from heart and rosetta to more advanced free-pour designs, always encouraging creativity and progress. Each class is fun, friendly, and confidence-building—no intimidation, just support and solid feedback. At I Am Barista, we’re also proud of the community we’ve built. Our training space is a welcoming hub where coffee lovers, career changers, hospitality veterans, and complete beginners come together to learn, laugh, and share a passion for the craft. Whether you're a university student looking for a part-time café job, a traveller wanting to boost your employability, or an aspiring coffee artist chasing the perfect pour, we have a place for you. We’re not a franchise. We’re not a factory. We’re a boutique, heart-driven coffee school dedicated to excellence, empowerment, and espresso. Interesting Facts About I Am Barista: We offer classes four days a week (Tuesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday) to suit various schedules. Our founder speaks fluent Spanish and English—many of our students appreciate the bilingual approach. Over 70% of our students land café jobs within 1–4 weeks of completing their training. Our studio is available for private bookings and custom corporate team-building events. Every student receives a Certificate of Completion and access to exclusive practice resources post-training. We’re constantly evolving—2025 will see the launch of new modules, including filter brewing and café workflow simulations. Ultimately, we’re here to make coffee education personal, practical, and powerful. We believe that every student has the potential to succeed—and we’re here to guide them from “I want to be a barista” to “I AM Barista.”
