Grief is the normal reaction to any significant emotional loss. Edu-Therapy is the only grief programme built from the ground up to address loss from any cause. Most grief therapies only address bereavement - i.e. a human died. The truth is we all experience multiple losses throughout our lives and grief is cummulative. There are hundreds of life events that create grief from the more visible losses like marital break up, family estrangement, career or job loss, pet loss, financial loss and loss of health to the more invisible losses like loss of childhood, loss of safety, loss of innocence and many others. Edu-Therapy is an alternative to traditional talking therapies and is in fact Education that has a therapeutic effect. We teach people how to let go of emotional pain and move forward with the rest of their lives. Our motto is loss is forever but the pain doesn’t have to be. A key difference is the structure of the process. Delivered over 8 sessions either to individuals or groups the programme brings awareness, acknowledgement and behavioural elements together in a unique and emotionally safe way. As there is no need for disclosure merely the acknowledgement of the relevant emotions many people find it a liberating approach. Not wanting to talk about very painful experiences again being a key reason some people avoid the talking approach. Edu-Therapy was created by Eric Cline of Ontario Canada over 15 years ago. It was developed in consultations with a range of professionals including psychologists and neurologists. Today over 80% of indigenous Canadian groups have members of their community trained to be Certified Edu-Therapy Specialists and Eric’s name is synonymous with grief in that country. In 2022 Carole Henderson, already a highly experienced grief specialist became the first Certified Edu-Therapy trainer outside Canada - offering Certification Training to people in the UK. Carole trained with Eric daily for months and made trips to Canada to experience the process first hand with the founder and other Canadian trainers. Certification is an intense 4 day experiential training programme where participants first learn how to resolve their own losses and then learn how to teach the process to others. The training in the UK is accredited by the ACCPH. Grief Resolution means letting go of the pain, in other words people can have fond memories without them turning painful allowing them to live their lives more fully. The most usual comment from people completing the course is how much lighter they feel. In a feedback study of UK residents who have completed the programme 100% reported feeling better or a lot better which is astonishing especially when considering the subject matter of the course. In the UK there is a network of Edu-Therapy Specialists offering the 8 session programme. Most work in private practice, some for charities or CICs and some for the NHS. Carole Henderson is the only UK trainer and offers open training either in person or live streamed via Zoom. She can also offer training to groups on private commission such as for organisations. Growth in the UK is steady and in 2024 the training became Accredited by the ACCPH meaning that graduates are entitled to become members of the same. Carole is based in a village near Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire and is passionate about helping grieving people get the best possible support. This is why all the training includes a 3 year support programme for all graduates to ensure high standards are consistently achieved.
