For as long as I can remember, I’ve been passionate about education. For nine years, I taught Mathematics and Physical Sciences in South African classrooms, helping learners wrestle with formulas, experiments, and exam stress. Over time, I began to notice a gap. While schools do their best, many learners still need extra support, whether it’s through tutoring, structured revision, or just access to clear and simple resources. Parents too often feel frustrated, unsure of how to help their children succeed. That’s where Fundisa was born, a vision to make quality education more accessible, supportive, and tailored to South African learners. Why Fundisa? The name Fundisa means “to teach” in isiZulu and isiXhosa, which perfectly captures the platform’s mission, to teach, to guide, and to empower. Fundisa is not just another tutoring website; it’s designed to become a comprehensive learning hub where learners, parents, and tutors come together to achieve better results. While global platforms like Khan Academy or Coursera provide excellent content, they don’t fully cater to the South African CAPS and IEB curricula. Learners here often struggle to find resources that align directly with their school requirements. Fundisa bridges that gap. What Fundisa Offers 1. Tutoring Marketplace Fundisa is building a marketplace of tutors who specialise in CAPS and IEB subjects. Parents and learners will be able to find trusted tutors, view their profiles, and book lessons easily. Unlike informal tutoring setups, the platform ensures transparency, consistency, and quality. Tutors will also earn fair commissions, making it a sustainable system for both sides. 2. Exam Preparation and Resources Past papers and memos are often described as “the secret weapon” for exam success. Fundisa offers a growing library of past papers, memos, and study guides so that learners can practice with the exact material they’ll face in exams. 3. Live Classes and Courses In addition to one-on-one tutoring, Fundisa will provide live exam prep sessions and packaged courses. These will allow learners to revise core concepts with expert teachers, ask questions in real time, and access recordings afterwards. 4. Homeschooling Support With homeschooling becoming increasingly popular in South Africa, many families are looking for structured support that aligns with CAPS and IEB. Fundisa aims to fill this gap by offering homeschool packages, recommended learning paths, and progress tracking tools for parents. 5. Future-Focused Features • The long-term vision is to make Fundisa a one-stop educational ecosystem, including: • Parent dashboards to track progress and assign tasks. • Learner leaderboards, badges, and gamification to keep motivation high. • Integrated classroom management tools for tutors. • Built-in scheduling and virtual classrooms, so everything happens in one place. • Financial management systems for payouts and platform growth. The Bigger Picture South Africa’s education system faces enormous challenges. Many learners are left behind due to overcrowded classrooms, lack of individual attention, and limited access to resources. Parents often spend hours searching for reliable tutors or materials, while tutors themselves struggle to connect with the right learners. Fundisa is designed to tackle these challenges head-on by creating a central platform where education is simplified, transparent, and accessible. Think of it as the local answer to massive international platforms but with content, tutors, and strategies built for our curriculum, our learners, and our future. My Journey to Fundisa When I left the classroom to focus on Fundisa, it wasn’t an easy decision. Teaching had always been more than just a job, it was a calling. But I realised that if I truly wanted to impact learners at scale, I needed to build something bigger than one classroom. Over the years, I’ve seen learners who were bright and capable still fall short, not because they lacked potential, but because they lacked access: access to quality tutors, to resources, to confidence-building revision. I’ve also seen parents willing to invest in their child’s future, but unsure where to turn. Fundisa is my attempt to change that. By combining technology with the passion of South African educators, I believe we can build a platform that doesn’t just help learners pass exams it helps them thrive. The Vision Ahead In the next few years, I envision Fundisa becoming the go-to place for South African learners whether they’re in Grade 4 or Grade 12, CAPS or IEB, public school or homeschooling. A learner should be able to log in, access lessons, practice with past papers, book a tutor, and track their progress all in one space. Parents should feel reassured, knowing their child’s education is being guided with structure and care. Tutors should feel supported; with the tools and community they need to deliver their best. Education is often described as the key to unlocking opportunity. But for many South Africans, the lock feels impossible to turn. With Fundisa, my hope is to create a platform that hands learners that key not just for exams, but for life beyond the classroom. Conclusion Building Fundisa is a journey, one that started in my classroom and has now grown into a vision for a nationwide educational platform. It’s not just about technology or tutoring; it’s about reimagining education for South Africa, where every learner has the chance to succeed, no matter their background. If even one learner gains confidence, if one parent feels less anxious, if one tutor finds purpose and sustainability through Fundisa, then this journey will be worth it. But I believe we can go much further. With the right support and community, Fundisa has the potential to transform how South African learners experience education. And this is just the beginning.
