Ross and Shauna Thiessen founded Empower Energy Corp. in Grande Prairie, AB in 2015. With a background in the oil and gas industry, they were looking for a new pursuit that could empower people locally in Western Canada, and that also has the potential to provide humanitarian aid both home and abroad. Solar energy fit this goal and so Empower Energy Corp. was born.
The mission of the company is to create positive change for people and the environment through the installation of solar PV.
Empower Energy has now grown to provide solar PV design and installation across Alberta and B.C. The company has operations based in Grande Prairie, Calgary, Medicine Hat, Vancouver, Vernon, and Creston.

Grid-tied solar power is a great investment for those who own the property for their home or business. Solar investment break-even is typically between 5-10 years in Alberta and British Columbia.
Alberta has a Micro Generation net billing system, and BC has a Net Metering program that allows consumers to connect their solar PV to the grid and utilize it like a giant battery. When excess electricity is produced during the day, it flows out to the grid and the solar owner receives a credit for this energy to offset nights and winter days.

Off-grid solar is a great solution for those looking to live an “off-grid lifestyle”, or in those instances where bringing grid power in to a new site is costly. We can build turnkey offgrid systems that come in an easily transported sea can, or we can design and build a solution that fits your specific roof or yard.
With off grid solar it is important to take the time and clearly determine the max loads and max time in use to correctly size your battery bank. Undersized batteries will cycle too deep and will quickly diminish the useable life of the battery. Flooded acid batteries should typically not be cycled deeper than 50% of the battery banks capacity. Lithium batteries can be cycled up to 90% of capacity and have longer life expectancy, but often cost much more than conventional battery types.

Our team also installs grid-tied solar systems with battery backup that can power loads in your home in the case of a power outage. This could be a system designed to run critical loads only through a critical loads panel, or a whole home backup system with enough battery storage to run your complete home over a period of time.

We have installed nearly 1 million watt hours of battery storage over the past five years and we see the demand for energy storage continuing to increase. We provide battery solutions that include lithium and flooded acid solutions.
