Company Leadership:
Edgewood Studio’s Principal, Joseph Messick has 30 years’ experience in design, architecture, building, and furniture construction industries. His work has garnered several awards, and has been featured in various publications. Mr. Messick holds a B.S. in Environmental Design, a 3-1/2 yr Masters in Architecture (M.Arch III), and has studied at the Prestigious Center for Furniture Craftsmanship in Maine. He currently serves on Woodbridge, New Jersey’s Environmental Commission, and Cultural Arts Commission.
Design Aesthetic:
Our design aesthetic was largely influenced by Mr. Messick’s experiences in New England, where he traveled and worked with a unique group of professional artists and architects that designed, and built their own work, and lived on site. From his bio:
“I was an architectural graduate, looking for a more traditional approach to designing and building: where designers were directly involved with the construction of their ideas. There, I worked with designers and artisans in the region who specialized in timberframe-constructed buildings featuring live edge. “…“Working with the natural organic edge of the tree was inspiring – the curves and undulations gave us new insights to our initial design ideas, and made the building evolve- almost like a piece of sculpture, where we get to reconsider design and product as we work the material. From then I was hooked.”
Commitment to the Environment:
Edgewood Studio is committed to environmental responsibility, and the conservation of our environment in every facet of our business:
• Wood Suppliers: We work with local sawmills and sawyers that mill logs from tree service companies that would otherwise have gone to the landfill. Because of this, we get some unique slabs that include cherry, sycamore, chestnut, walnut, spalted and ambrosia maples, holly, flaming box alder, ash, sycamore, katsura, osage, beech, birch, alder, oak, hickory, dogwood, hackberry, applewood, and a long list of others not typically found in your local hardwood store.
• Local vendors/ sub-contractors: About 90% of all our products and materials are sourced and produced within 200 miles of our location. We work and partner with several business in the region including designers, welders, fabricators, upholstery, powdercoaters, platers, material suppliers (see wood suppliers above), tool makers, and even our finishes are locally made (see below).
• Our finishes: Are low-VOC waterborne lacquers, and conversion varnishes are made in New Jersey, and provide a very durable, and water/ alcohol resistant finish that will provide years of lasting beauty. We also offer refinishing services for our furniture products to extend its life when necessary.
• Packaging: We will reuse packaging from our material suppliers where appropriate. So the bubble wrap, airbags, peanuts, etc you find protecting your new product when shipped, was also protecting parts it was made out of. Our purchased shipping materials are fully recyclable, and for delivery, we blanket wrap our products, and take them with us for the next delivery to our happy customer.
• Recycling: We recycle a high percentage of our waste, including mulching of our clean shavings.
