Any Old Lights started out online in 2015, through a love of proper old lighting – the sort of light that tells a story. Like-minded people latched onto us surprisingly quickly and we opened a pop-up shop in our hometown of Fowey in Cornwall, UK, the following year.
Somehow that’s a long time in the past now and we currently occupy a stunning-looking former butcher’s shop in the same town, complete with 1920s decorative tiling and marble-topped window-display area. So many people come into our shop, open-mouthed, and liken it to an art gallery. You see, we only stock things we love, and they have to look amazing.
Our core business is vintage lighting, primarily reclaimed lights from decommissioned cargo ships. Always cast-metal, they come in brass, bronze, copper and aluminium. They don’t ‘tink’ when you flick them, they ‘donk’. They have weight. They have gravitas. They’re statement lights in often intricate designs. Most are at least 50 years old, stripped of their original ocean-going enamel and professionally polished.
We stock both vintage wall lights and vintage ceiling lights, as well as vast old cargo lights that we custom-mount on tripods, to create eye-popping floor lamps. You buy a light from us knowing that very few people own the same.
As you can imagine, some of these vintage lights aren’t cheap so we created our own exclusive budget range of Revivals retro lighting. We spot classic design patterns that are disappearing from circulation – the way all vintage lights will go as plastic and LEDs supersede metals – and recreate them with our own twist. Quality is key: we use cast metals, like the originals – ‘donk’ not ‘tink’, remember – so our Revivals retro lights will last a lifetime.
Riffing on the nautical theme, we couldn’t resist spreading sideways into maritime antiques and curios, which always look incredible. We stock anything from hulking (but beautiful) vintage engine-order telegraphs, to antique copper and brass masthead lamps, to vintage ships’ clocks, which are one of our most popular items. Our clockwork vintage Vostok Russian submarine clocks – if we’ve managed to track a few down (they’re becoming horribly rare) – have to be seen to be believed.
