Airkooled Kustoms started when an 18-month-old boy told his mom, “I want to go play with my Volkswagens, cars, and trucks.” It took a few decades for that dream to become reality, and that toddler turned into a grizzled man who’s forgotten more about classic VWs than most people ever know. Many enthusiasts raised an eyebrow or two when they heard his plan to build a world-famous VW restoration company in rural Alabama. But Spook knew it could be done – and by assembling one of the best teams of tinkerers, customizers, and creators, he’s done it.

Those classic air-cooled Beetles, buses, Karmann Ghias, and all the other weird little German cars have the sort of brutally simple engineering that endures.
