The Norwalk Seaport Association (NSA) is a Connecticut 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving, promoting, and celebrating the rich maritime heritage of Norwalk, Connecticut and the Long Island Sound shoreline. For decades, the Association has served as the primary steward of one of Connecticut’s most treasured historic landmarks — the Sheffield Island Lighthouse — while offering the public a unique and memorable connection to the region’s storied coastal history, ecology, and culture. Rooted in the belief that communities thrive when they stay connected to their natural and historical surroundings, the Norwalk Seaport Association brings together boaters, nature lovers, history enthusiasts, families, and visitors from across Connecticut and the greater New York metropolitan area. Our programs, cruises, and events offer something for everyone — from seasoned mariners to first-time visitors discovering Long Island Sound for the very first time. Sheffield Island Lighthouse: A Connecticut Treasure At the heart of NSA’s mission is the stewardship of the Sheffield Island Lighthouse, a historic lighthouse situated on Sheffield Island in Norwalk Harbor. Built in 1868, the lighthouse stands as one of the finest examples of Victorian Gothic lighthouse architecture in New England. The island itself is a designated wildlife refuge and bird sanctuary, home to one of the largest nesting colonies of wading birds in Connecticut, including great blue herons, snowy egrets, glossy ibis, and black-crowned night herons. The Norwalk Seaport Association operates public lighthouse cruises from Norwalk to Sheffield Island, giving passengers the opportunity to tour the lighthouse, explore the island’s natural trails, observe nesting shorebirds, and enjoy sweeping views of Long Island Sound and the Norwalk Islands. These cruises are among the most popular ecotourism and heritage tourism experiences in Fairfield County, drawing visitors from Norwalk, Westport, Darien, Greenwich, Stamford, and communities throughout Connecticut and New York. Maritime Heritage Programming and Public Events Beyond the lighthouse cruises, the Norwalk Seaport Association offers a robust calendar of public programming that celebrates Connecticut’s coastal identity and engages the broader community throughout the boating season. NSA’s annual events include: Season Kickoff Event — Held each spring, the Season Kickoff marks the beginning of NSA’s cruise and programming season with a festive gathering that brings together members, supporters, and the broader Norwalk community. It is a signature event for maritime enthusiasts and community members who share a love of Long Island Sound. Harbor Bird Watching Tours — Guided naturalist tours of Norwalk Harbor and the Norwalk Islands, offering participants a chance to observe the remarkable diversity of shorebirds, wading birds, and waterfowl that inhabit this ecologically significant coastal habitat. These tours are ideal for birding enthusiasts, families with children, educators, and anyone with an interest in coastal ecology and conservation. Sheffield Island Lighthouse Cruises — Regularly scheduled public cruises departing from Norwalk to Sheffield Island, featuring guided tours of the historic lighthouse and opportunities to explore the island’s trails and wildlife refuge. Private charters are also available for groups, corporate outings, and special occasions. Fundraising and Community Events — NSA hosts a variety of fundraising events throughout the year to support its preservation and programming mission, including member appreciation gatherings and seasonal celebrations that highlight Norwalk’s role as a historic Connecticut harbor town. Serving Norwalk, Fairfield County, and the Connecticut Shoreline The Norwalk Seaport Association is proud to be a cornerstone of the South Norwalk waterfront community and a recognized leader in Connecticut maritime heritage preservation. Located in Norwalk, CT — one of the state’s most vibrant and historically significant coastal cities — NSA operates at the intersection of history, ecology, education, and community engagement. Norwalk’s harbor has been a center of maritime commerce and culture for over three centuries, from the oyster industry that once defined the region to the recreational boating community that thrives here today. The Norwalk Seaport Association honors that legacy by creating programs and experiences that educate the public, inspire stewardship of Long Island Sound, and ensure that future generations remain connected to Connecticut’s maritime past. NSA’s service area extends well beyond Norwalk itself. Visitors and supporters regularly travel from Westport, Darien, New Canaan, Greenwich, Stamford, Bridgeport, Fairfield, Trumbull, and communities across Fairfield County to participate in NSA’s cruises and events. The organization also draws visitors from New Haven County and the greater New York metropolitan area, including Westchester County, New York City, and Long Island, making NSA a true regional destination for maritime heritage tourism and coastal ecotourism. Conservation and Environmental Stewardship The Norwalk Seaport Association is deeply committed to the conservation of Long Island Sound and the Norwalk Islands ecosystem. Sheffield Island’s wildlife refuge status reflects NSA’s dedication not only to historic preservation but to protecting the natural habitats that make the Norwalk Islands so ecologically valuable. Through its birding tours and lighthouse programming, NSA actively promotes environmental education and public awareness of the fragile coastal ecosystems of Long Island Sound. The organization works in partnership with conservation advocates, local government, and regional environmental organizations to ensure that the Norwalk Islands remain a haven for wildlife and a source of wonder for all who visit. A Nonprofit Organization Built on Community Support As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, the Norwalk Seaport Association relies on the generosity of members, donors, corporate sponsors, and the broader community to sustain its mission. Membership in NSA provides supporters with priority access to cruises and events, opportunities to connect with fellow maritime enthusiasts, and the satisfaction of knowing their support directly funds the preservation of Sheffield Island Lighthouse and the continuation of NSA’s public programming. NSA also welcomes corporate sponsorships, private event bookings, and charitable giving from individuals and organizations that share a commitment to Connecticut’s coastal heritage. Contributions to the Norwalk Seaport Association are tax-deductible to the extent permitted by law. Whether you are a Connecticut resident looking for a unique family outing, a birding enthusiast seeking guided access to one of the most significant shorebird colonies in the Northeast, a history buff fascinated by lighthouse architecture and New England maritime culture, or a boater proud of Long Island Sound’s legacy, the Norwalk Seaport Association welcomes you.
